How does Michigan view your credentials?

Right now, I'm extremely worried with my chances to get into michigan...
My friends brother got deferred from the u of m engineer school with a 3.9 (with 3 APs) and 30 on the ACT, though he did not have a ton of ECs (4 years lax and 1 year football). But another one of my friends had a 3.7 (with 4 APs) and 34 on ACT and got deferred (he was part of NHS, student senate, Community service team, and the swim team)..
Me? Well I have a 3.8 (with 3 APs) and im expecting to raise my ACT to only about 30 by the time I apply to UM, but ill have multiple extracirricular on my app- 3 years football, 4 years hockey, 4 years baseball, NHS, Community Service Team, student senate (I'm planning on being president)

Should I be worried about getting accepted?

How much does UM weigh GPA, ACT, ECs, and Community Service?

Academic GPA and rigor are very important, ECs only considered. <a href=“Office of Budget and Planning”>Office of Budget and Planning;

Keep in mind that U of M admissions recalculates your GPA in core subjects to normalize differing GPAs across all applicants. They pay attention to the rigor of curriculum that the student has taken in high school; in other words, did the student challenge him/herself by taking advanced or honors classes offered by the high school. Also the student’s GPA as compared to the pool of cohorts from his/her high school is very important.
Your high school counselor may have better information regarding the students (from your high school) who were deferred.

They actually explain their evaluation process and criteria n much greater detail than most schools do:

[How We Evaluate Your Application | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/drupal/how-we-evaluate-your-application)

And they even give you a look at their evaluation sheet (same web page, find link to Evaluation Sheet on left side of page).

It appears they give you separate scores on 1) secondary school academic performance (GPA, quality of curriculum, standardized test scores, academic interests, class rank); 2) quality of the educational environment (rigor and competitiveness of your school); and 3) teacher and GC recs. Things like ECs and awards just go into a “Personal Background” section that generates comments but not a score. Then, combining the scores with the various comments sections, each evaluator rates the applicant “outstanding,” “excellent,” “good,” “average/fair,” or “below average/poor,” with several gradations within each of those categories.

On that rating system, it’s hard to see how things like ECs are going to carry very much weight (unless you’re a recruited athlete). Your 3.8 GPA and 30 ACT are good, but about average for the University of Michigan. So I’d say it could go either way, depending on how they rate things like the rigor of your HS curriculum and the strength of your teacher and GC recs.
