Does it simply decrease the total cost of attendance, and keep my parent's and my contribution the same? Or is there a set allowance Cornell assumes you'll spend no matter what, and if I end up spending less than that I can keep the difference? Their website is so vague and uninformative...

Each year your financial aid package will account for the cost of a double room and the 14 meal/week board plan. This is done regardless of whether you live on campus or not.

If you choose to live off campus, you get to keep any money credited to your account after tuition and other fees are paid. In addition, if the cost of your rent/electric/heat/internet exceeds what Cornell budgets your for (for 9 months), then you may request a budget increase and can receive additional aid.

Alright, thanks! That’s a good thing, I can see why so many people move off campus.
