How does one go about acquiring a Federal Work Study job?

In my financial aid package, I was offered some $3,000 in FWS aid. I was looking on the Virtual Job Board to browse my choices, and most of the postings for FWS are for immediate employment. Should I wait until I get on campus to apply for these jobs, or are there other jobs that I can apply for that start after move-in and also satisfy FWS? I was thinking of becoming a student assistant for the math department and/or working in the dining halls or recreation centers, but could I work under these positions and still satisfy FWS?

You do not start FWS program until August 21. You should contact the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) to discuss. If there are openings for ones beginning Aug 21, you should be able to apply but call OSFA first because it is possible they won’t allow applying until after your summer registration session where you should also meet someone from OSFA. At the same time it is best to get job signed up before you arrive in Aug. Whether you can do something in math dept, other, simply depends on whether that is a position approved for FWS and is actually one available.

That’s what I thought, thank you! I shot an email to the address listed on the OSFA site for student employment a while back but got no response. I’ll try sending one to the general OSFA address, and if that fails, I guess I’ll just give 'em a call. And as for the position as student assistant in the math department, there is actually an application available for Fall 2011 students and one of the questions asks if you’re eligible for FWS. I just thought that it might be approved for FWS from that, but I’ll definitely try to get more clarification from them.
