How Does President's Resignation Affect Quality of School?

I was on the Rose-Hulman website today and noticed that Gerald Jabukowski has announced his resignment after the conclusion of the school year. How does this impact students at Rose-Hulman? I have heard that he was very talented at his job and did a lot for the college. When I visited the campus last summer it seemed like he was relatively new to to the job. Any word on where/why he is moving on?

We were all very surprised to hear about Dr. Jakubowski's resignation. He is very well liked here and has started several new programs and been instrumental in planning for the next several decades. I am not sure why he decided to leave or where he is going, but I'd guess that he is moving on to a larger school. As far as the impact on the school, I don't think things will change very much; we have a strategy that works and we'll continue along that path. The board of trustees said it has already started looking for a replacement and I'm sure whoever they find will do a great job.

To be honest, the president's resignation shouldn't really affect the quality of our education in the short term (5 years or so). Department heads control the academic agenda, so the President doesn't have much say in terms of curricula or a department's programs (in the short term, again).

For a period of about a year before Jakubowski, we had a president that was widely disliked by many at Rose. His name was Jack Midgley. All the drama caused by his presence did not affect students' education much at all.

I'm a Rose student and haven't heard why Dr. J is leaving. Everyone seemed to like him and approve of the job he was doing, and he's had nothing but nice things to say about the school. Most other students I know are puzzled.

Dr. J just sent us an email announcing that he has accepted the position as provost at The California Maritime Academy. He said that at the time he announced his resignation, he was not able to say where he was going, but now he able to do so.

Yup, I would bet this announcement was timed such that everyone's focused on finals, then goes on a 10 day break before coming back so it's not something they're going to think about much.

Dr. J seemed to be popular with the institute, I'm not sure the exact reasons for him leaving. Today he announced to the school that his next job will be as Provost at the California Maritime Academy, student body 850. Maybe he just didn't like the job responsibilities of president. Maybe he hated central Indiana. I can't blame him for taking a job in the hills of California versus. the flatland corn fields of Indiana.

Regardless, as has been echoed here, this doesn't have a significant impact on the educational quality. He's put some good programs and initiatives in place, and whoever is next in line is not going to come out and change everything right away, it just doesn't work that way.

Puzzling move, but ultimately it does not have a huge impact on the institute in the short-term.
