how does Rice fare outside of Texas?

Do grads usually go off to other major cities like NYC or do they usually stick around in Houston and snag up the best jobs? Have there been any students that have gone abroad?

I will just say that, with the way you phrased it, the answer to your last question would be yes for practically ever institution in the US including community colleges.

I don't know the numbers, but Rice grads go all over the place. People in the right positions in other parts of the country know about Rice. Most students have extremely good luck getting into high-end grad programs, which make it even easier to get a job somewhere else in the country. If, however, you plan on getting a job right after Rice, there will almost certainly be a company in Houston that would be very happy to hire you (not that you couldn't get one elsewhere, but Rice students have a certain affinity for opportunities in Houston).
And yes, many people go abroad after graduation. Again, not sure on the numbers.

well for being the real harvard of the south, i would suppose that Rice students fare well with the BEST companies outside of TX. I meant I-banking companies, consulting firms, NGOs, etc. The schools seems to be better known by people in the know rather than harboring laymen prestige. Which is actually a very good thing.
Anyone in here from abroad that can vouch for Rice's international recognition?

This is the survey of all class of 2006 graduates. It has useful information such as where people with certain majors ended up working, slicing the info in areas of geography, companies, graduate programs, etc.

sorry but the link is not working. would you mind posting it again?

The link wouldn't work for me either. I went to the Rice main site www.rice.edu and put "cohesion survey 2006" in their search engine and got it.

After reading it, I could tell that my son didn't answer the survey.

Try this.
Sorry, didn't the whole thing grabbed the first time.

I just checked it and it worked for me.

The survey was
administered to the bachelor's degree recipients at the time they picked up their caps and
gowns for the commencement ceremonies. The survey was administered to master's and
doctoral candidates when they submitted their theses and dissertations to the Vice President
for graduate studies.

You have to understand that these statistics are collected at graduation. Not 6 months after, or one year after, or 3 months after - but actually to students picking up their cap and gowns. It would be more interesting to see the information after a period of time, say one or two years. My DD is a senior, and she knows quite a few students who plan to work or travel for a year or two before attending graduate school/law school/ med school. Who knows how they would answer that survey!!!! So don't read it and say, "Dang, I don't want to work in Houston! I guess I need to go to some school on the East Coast." Houston has a lot of multinational companies, with branches all over the USA and the world. Some start in Houston, then transfer to other locations. I know that, in my DD's case, she would like to be working near some of her Rice friends, and she may very well start out in Houston or Texas for her first job. Also, plenty start in other locations. :)

Thanks for that clarification, anxiousmom. It explains a lot!

I have heard that a lot of Rice grads end up in the Bay Area. Is this true?

The Bay Area does have quite a few Rice grads. I'm one! Straight from Rice to the Bay Area. I had offers in Houston and Dallas as well.

My best friends from Rice, some of whom initially started in Texas, ended up raising their kids in the following places: South Carolina, Kentucky, Switzerland, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Louisiana, and California. Many friends stayed in Texas, but others are in places like NYC, Chicago, Florida.
