How Does Sophomore Year Kick Off?

I'm a freshman in high school, and I realize I don't know anything because of that. Going into high school, there was all this pressure about how hard it would get. But it seemed like freshman year was still a slow transition into the real deal.

Can any of you older folks tell me what it's like going into sophomore year? Will it be tougher than before? How much more stressed will I feel? I heard that you can't really complain about high school until after freshman year.

It’s not that much different from freshman year, in my experience. The academic difficulty of high school (at an average school) is overrated.

It really depends on what you’re used to and what new courses you’re taking next year. I would guess you went to a relatively tough middle school and maybe you had friends who came with you to high school, so the whole jolt of freshman year- new people, hard classes, huge workload- never really hit you. If you’re trying out more AP classes or something next year, maybe one that’s out of your comfort zone, and joining time-intensive clubs, sophomore year could be much harder. Honestly though, you’re really going to feel a big change for the first time in junior year when things get pretty challenging for almost everyone.
Personally, sophomore year was actually easier for me than freshman year because I knew friends at school, had a similar courseload, and got better at managing my time. So this depends on you :)

Smart kid. ;)

It depends on what classes you’re planning on taking and your school in general, but I’ll give you my .02. Until this year, I didn’t have to study…like at all. Not trying to brag, because it’s not something I’m proud of (I don’t have great studying habits because of that) but I had to really study this year. Hard. May not be the same for you, but in my case it was, because not only did I feel the classes I’m taking are harder (took more advanced/AP classes) but I also increased my load of EC’s.

My biggest mistake I made this year was that I didn’t think it would be any different than freshman year, so I didn’t study/work as hard in the beginning, so it hurt me slightly in the long run. As you can see, my experience has varied from others, so it’ll depend. Regardless, if you didn’t have to work too hard this year, work harder next year, as even if it turns out to not be as difficult, it’ll prepare you for junior year.

Also, I feel really old now that I’m about to be a junior…wow.

Personally, for me, my sophomore year was loaded with school and ECs. Right from the start I noticed I got more homework than I did in freshman year. It wasn’t necessarily harder, but just a lot more content. I think my teachers were in the “ok they’re not baby freshman anymore” mentality and completely piled on work.

This year, as a sophomore, starting out was tough. I was overwhelmed with sports and much harder and more demanding classes. If you are taking any APs, the transition will be hard. It also depends on your study habits and workload. I recommend going to tutoring whenever you don’t understand anything. Sophomore year was also WAY more fun for me socially, but everything depends on your school and classes. Have fun, it’s not too bad at all!

For me, it was much of the same feel, just knowing where to go to get around campus.

However, I feel my year is in many ways much different in terms of change…

Things at my school were at their peak freshman year, academically as a whole, then the downward spiral.

It started out just like freshman year, because I have block schedule and got an easy term. But then quarters 2/4 are packed with 3 APs and 2 honors classes, one of them being the hardest in the school. (Much like jr/sr year but not as prepared for it and you get 1 break term in between unlike having 3-4 APs in both sets of quarters).

Socially, I began improving, but not fully.

At my school, they make sure that freshmen have it a bit easier, so classes freshmen were required to take were turned down a notch or two. So it does get harder sophomore year, but as long as you’re prepared to study a bit more, you should be fine

I know that freshman classes are turned down a bit, but since our school is kinda average I’m in some classes with just upperclassmen, and those are still a bit easier than expected. Will it change as much considering that?
