my sons are looking at pitt, penn state and OSU. they were wondering how someone would compare the three dorms and food.

Well you are on the Pitt forum so obviously the Pitt dorms are the best! I am only familiar with PSUs dorm which they show on tours - which wasn’t so great but I would suspect upperclass dorms would be nicer/have more ammenities. You can check out Pitt’s options online, my two lived in Sutherland freshman yr (suite style) and then one lived soph yr in Pennsylvania Hall in a 4 person suite, one in Brackenridge (5 person suite). Basically dorms range from standard to suite style to apt style. Lots of kids find housing off campus by their jr/sr yr. but if you want to continue to live on campus, you can. Food - eh, you have two dining halls which take swipes and a multitude of eateries that take dining funds - pretty much like the food courts in the HUB.

I will to @amandakayak that the food in the dining halls isn’t bad (in fact they just redid the dining hall last year even though it was remodeled 5-6 years prior to that) but the food gets repetitive. You have a ton of choices in the main hall below Towers (Market Central) for sandwiches/paninis, a diner area (burgers, fries, grilled cheese), a make-your-own-pasta station, pizza, make-your-own-stirfry station, international foods section, salad bar, gluten free/vegetarian/vegan section in the back, cereal, baked goods, waffles, etc.

But like I said, when you’re eating a majority of your meals there, the choices become repetitive fast. There were only so many days I could handle stir fry or pasta before just giving up and eating somewhere else.

On campus there are a ton of “grab and go” restaurants (bagel places, home made food, sandwich places, grills, sushi, chik fil A, pizza hut, etc.) where you can use the money from your meal plan to buy food and eat elsewhere. I tended to go with this option as it allowed me to take food home to eat/study or out and about to meet up with someone.
