How are the dorms at UPENN

College of Arts and Sciences .. and Wharton

All of the schools have the same dorms. They're not my favorite part of the school.

Penn not UPENN... pet peeve.

oh ok.. do you have any choices? are they all close to classes? how big? furniture (wood or metal).. etc

Housing and Conference Services

looking at website, i really like the W.E.B. Du Bois College house, double 2BR/counter range/refrigerator/own bathroom.... is that hard to get? do u request housing?

oh and where do freshman stay

You would have no trouble getting into DuBois. There's a lottery in may where you put down like 10 top choices.

Most freshmen live in hill (all freshmen), the quad (fisher hassenfeld, riepe, and ware) (mostly freshmen), or other mixed-classes houses ( kings court / english, stouffer, dubois, gregory)

The dorms are actually pretty decent, I would say. Better than Columbia/Cornell/Brown, on par with Harvard, but worse than most of Yale, and significantly worse than Princeton/Dartmouth.

They have AC; well, most of them do.

What's the matter with Brown's dorms?

They were huge when I visited.

Is there something I missed...?

Some of them are just kind of... mangy.

That's fair.

yeah i saw pictures of penns dorms and they looked really nice!
one more question: does it cost more money if you get a 2 room double with bathroom/"kitchen" opposed to a single room double. and what about a single.. are all the different dorm styles different amounts of money?

you would call Princeton's dorms GOOD? omg I stayed there for a week one summer and it was a NIGHTMARE. They were so old, repulsive, and decrepit. Worst experience EVER...I really hope Penn can do better than that!

Heh. I loved my dorm at Princeton for a summer program for all of the reasons you hated it, nj_azn. I don't know if it was just my dorm, but there was a [non-operational] fireplace, some large-ish walkable area, and I had two great views of the campus.

I could just see myself as an side character in "This Side of Paradise" whenever I walked into the room. I thought about how it must have been in the 20's, when the fireplace was surely operational and there must have been a large, cozy chair in front of it.

To each his own, I suppose.

Heh, I suppose I'm hopeless romantic a la Amadeuic/This Side of Paradise. And while it's true that some of the rooms are decrepit as you described, from what I understand the rooms in the new colleges are quite nice.

^yes that much is quite true...I got a chance to see the new ones and they were borderline acceptable

For the person who asked about cost, here's this year's freshmen rent schedule: http://www.business-services.upenn.edu/housing/frent0809.pdf I was told to expect costs to go up by a couple percent next year.

On the link CDN_dancer has posted, the Quads has been described as (3BR/LR/kit).
Does that BR stand for bathroom or bedroom?

haha bedroom!

there's only one bathroom per highrise unit
