How does work study affect aid?

If you are doing work study does that come out of your pell grant? Or does Financial aid cover you for all your classes if you are doing work study. Also what does pilot part time mean exactly?

Pell grant is a grant. It is an entitlement. You get the amount to which you are entitled.

Work Study is money the school pays you for working a work study job.

NO…your work study money does not come out of your Pell grant.

Why are you asking?

Work study shows up in many financial aid awards as its own thing - an amount you CAN earn if you get a job and work enough hours. It is separate from Pell.

Sometimes outside scholarships, if you have any, will reduce or remove your work-study award. My D’s school replaces her work study with her outside scholarship each year.

Now Im starting to understand.
Im asking cause there is a problem with my financial aid and bill.

What is wrong with your aid?

Not necessarily. Depends how much your classes cost.

Work study is a subsidy of your pay to an employer (usually on campus or non-profit) who employs you, so such employers will prefer to hire work study students over other students. Obviously, you need to take a job (whether work study subsidized or not) and work the needed amount to earn the specified (or larger) amount of money that you are assumed to be able to contribute through work earnings.

As noted previously, some schools will allow scholarships to replace your work earnings expectation or work study and/or federal direct loans first before reducing financial aid grants.

Say you are awarded $1000 work study for the semester. You need to find a job and EARN that $1000. It’s not money that just appears as a payment to the college. You have to work to get it.

Did you get a refund on your Pell Grant last term? We’re all of your costs paid?

If your costs were NOT paid in full, the college will FIRST pay any unfulfilled bills to the college with your Pell…so maybe you are getting less…because you OWED the college money.

There are a number of reasons why a Pell award refund would be reduced.

  1. School pays itself first...and the Pell was needed to pay itself first.
  2. You are not going to school full time.
  3. You have not met satisfactory academic progress.

According to the buscar I not getting cover for all or some of my classes even though I’m a full time student at a community college. Even my state aid got reduced.

How long have you been going to a CC? How many total credits do you have?

What exactly did you get for this semester and last semester…so we can see the difference.

Did your parents income change

I been going to CC for two years and have 73 earn credits. Last semester I got 2,583 and now I’m getting 646.

Maybe the number of credits is the issue. Once you have about 60, you’re supposed to transfer to a 4 year college.

Parent income probably has nothing to do with this because that would have affected Fall award.

Sounds like the issue is too many credits at a CC.

What was the $2583? A Pell grant? A state grant? A loan? What exactly?

@ mom2collegekids the $2583 is a pell grant. I also had some registration issues before the semester as well, but that should have been resolve.

The state grant usually goes to books.

Is it possible that your registration issues made it look like you were not enrolled full time when your financial aid was awarded for this term?

Go,to the financial aid office…and ask them why your Pell was reduced.

@thumper1 okay thanks I will go to the office, maybe they haven’t updated their records to give me the full time status
