How early can you start applying for scholarships?

Hi CCers,

I'm currently a rising sophmore, and I hear that, with enough determination and time, scholarships can give you enough dough to surpass your tuition, even allowing you to use it for food.

So when is the earliest time I can start searching and investing time for scholarships?

Sorry, but I still need to someone to hold my hand through this process.

Thanks guys. :)

There are certainly scholarships available to high schoolers. However, it is misleading to say that most people can pay for college in the manner you described. (If it were that easy, why wouldn’t everyone do it?) Scholarships are hard to get, and tend to be only for one year. (You can search this forum for students who applied for “a ton” of scholarships and got nothing/ very little).

Most grants (free money for college that doesn’t have to be paid back) to students come under the category of need and merit based aid from colleges themselves. Your best bet is to be the best student you can so that you can apply to schools with good need based and/ or merit aid.

The OP is already a college student, so that link won’t apply to him.

hear that, with enough determination and time, scholarships can give you enough dough to surpass your tuition, even allowing you to use it for food.

the chances of that are like winning the lottery, especially for a current college student. Outside scholarships tend to be small and for one year only - and many only accept high school senior applicants.

Ah sorry guys, I meant I’m a rising sophmore in high school. Shoulda made myself more clear

I’m aware of some scholarships that even middle school kids can get (I think it was a Kohls one for volunteer service or something). You’re never too early to start.

Go ahead and make an account at some scholarship search sites. Notably:

Fastweb.com

Oh!

Boy, you’re starting early!

Right now, your best bet is to study hard and get a high GPA and do well on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. (Study for those, too).

Find out if your schools gives the PSAT soph year. That one won’t count for National Merit, but it will tell you where you’re weak.

The best scholarships are from SCHOOLS…not from private sources. Many schools (not all schools) give big scholarships for high stats (test scores and GPA). Those are for 4 years.
