How easy are Fiat Luxes? Considering taking two

Currently my schedule is Eng 85 (American Novel), E&S Sci 15 (Intro to Oceanography), Hist 1A (Western Civilization), & Engl 19, the Fiat Lux of Birth of the Comic Strip, for a total of 16 units thus far.

I'm also interested in the Serendipity in Science Fiat Lux, which fits nicely into my schedule. Would this be okay or no bueno? If I really want to, should I just drop the other Fiat Lux and take this one instead of juggling both.

Any other comments about my schedule are welcome too. :)
I previously posted about debating whether to drop my cluster, (Intro to Myth), & actually decided to not take any clusters at all because of the lack of flexibility it'd put on my schedule all year, flexibility being something I need as an Undecided major.

They’re not hard, but they do take time out of your day. If they both fit in your schedule, just keep them for now and make a decision after a few meetings (and seeing the syllabus). If you don’t think you would enjoy the final project then it’s probably not worth your time.

I’ve heard of some where you do projects and crap, all for a pass/no pass 1 unit class.

I took one last year which was great - reading (which I didn’t do), small discussions based on opinions and such, really interesting and pertinent topics, and then the teacher bought us pizza on the last day.

I’m taking two to round out my schedule. Both professors are highly rated so hopefully they will be good.

Do it if you’re interested in the topic.

If you spend more than 1 hour a week outside class doing work for it, then its pointless (its only 1 unit and it fulfills no requirements besides maybe the minumum credit requirement- not necessary in your case though)

Most of them have basically no work (all we did in mine was talk in class and we got credit just for showing up)

Thanks guys! Hopefully the syllabus gets put up soon for both, but yeah I registered for those two. The professor for the Eng one is pretty highly rated, the one for Serendipity in Science I couldn’t find info on. The pass/no pass makes it seem preeetty easy so my fingers are crossed.
Which two are you taking kwwboarder?
Which one did you take binks09/theespys69?

One in spring with a law professor, although I doubt it will be taught again because he is becoming the dean of the law school (or something like that).

I’m taking Dystopias of the 20th Century with Ruiz, which seems to be mainly just reading 1984 and Brave New World, and *Statistics and Portfolio Risk Management with Stock Market Applications with Christou.

Those are interesting, not sure how I’d do with the Stats one. :stuck_out_tongue: My friend is interested in the Dystopias one but no word yet on his decision if he wants to take a Fiat Lux period or not. We should chat later about if how ours turn out.
Haha OT but I think we chatted before about AlcoholEdu. I take it you’re an incoming freshman also?

I did “How drugs are made”. Therapeutic/medical drugs, not weed and all that stuff haha.

are they really only for freshmen?

@jayjiggle Yep, I’m an incoming Freshman  I can’t wait for school to start. I’ve been thinking lately about dropping the stats seminar, especially because it would let me take another 5 unit class if for some reason I wanted to have no life and take 19 units first quarter.

@theespys69 haha yeah my friend wanted to do that but when he found out it wasn’t recreational drugs it dropped from his mind :P

@proflover i’m not sure, i actually thought upper grades were allowed to because i think i saw a schedule somewhere where fiat luxes were opened after a certain date to all undergrad. i could be wrong though

@kwwboarder  awesome! it’ll be bombb, haha don’t do TOO much first quarter! you’ve got lots of timee. is it going to benefit you though? haha tbh it wasn’t my idea of a great time. unless you like stats/stocks. but i’m pretty sure you’ll want a life  or if you don’t you can take 19 units next quarter. what orientation did you go to?

yeh that’s what i was confused about, the actual fiat lux website specifically calls them FRESHMEN seminars, but registrar says that they’re open to just undergraduates. i guess i’ll just worry about it next quarter, stupid unit cap :)

Haha yeah. I think I’m going to test it out for a couple weeks and if it’s overwhelming just drop the class I added. Thankfully I went to 101 so I had a bunch of time to tweak my schedule before everything got insanely full :)

Yeahh that’s what I was thinking too. See if it’s even interesting and worth my time! What class were you thinking of taking? Omgg rightt, my friend had orientation yesterday and he was DYING because all the classes were filled, at least ones he actually wanted. I went to 103 and I still got everything I wanted. :stuck_out_tongue: I wonder if you met my friends, I had 3 that went to 101

Well, I’m on the waitlist for Spanish 25. I want to take it as soon as possible because I’ve already been out of AP Spanish for a year and if I want to start up again I have to go straight to Spanish 25 without taking a lower class for review because I have credit for Spanish 6. What about you? Yeah, I couldn’t imagine. All the classes I’m enrolled in right now are filled. Maybe, what are their names and majors? I really don’t remember many people from Orientation though haha.
