I just got my invitation to Rutgers New Brunswick Honors college, and I’m just wondering how impressive that would look, especially compared to top 50 schools. I promise I’m not some snooty kid, but since I’m trying to go to an impressive law school after undergrad, I want a school that will make my resume look good. Also, I’m from Texas, so I know very little about the prestige of Rutgers at all. Thanks for your input!
The Honors College is pretty exclusive, it takes the top 500 students out of a freshmen class of 10,000. Staying in the program throughout your four years of undergrad and completing your honors thesis would without a doubt be a good resume booster.
@sashachup what @mohchan360 has said is correct. Rutgers NB, a public university, is listed on US News rankings as #57, which is pretty darn good. I’m in-state, so many of us take acceptance to Rutgers for granted (I didn’t take it for granted) but I’ve heard that out of state students are very impressed with Rutgers so…
I want to go to a really good law school after undergrad too! I don’t think attending Rutgers would hurt your chances in any way.
What is the difference between Honors College and Honors programs? Is there any academic difference? Is one harder to get into than the other?
Thanks
@noamaharon The Honors College is significantly harder to get into than the honors programs of individual schools. However, with the exception of the School of Pharmacy, I don’t believe there is an academic difference between the Honors College and honors programs.
The distinction between the two is really just where students live their freshmen year. The Honors College students lie in the Honors College on College Ave, whereas honors program students live in honors housing that has been designated by their individual schools.
@sashachup What are your stats and ECs, if you don’t mind me asking. I’m a prospective HC student
I have a 3.5 UW, 4.6 W 1440 SAT (one sitting) rank 168/520 11 AP classes
ECs are 2 years of varsity competitive district mock trial, 3 years of marching band, President of my schools Writers Guild, Teen Court, FNHS, there might be more?
Does being in the honors college give you greater access to research opportunities?
@bioscrubber yes it does. I attended their accepted students open house and they made it sound like research is a focal point of the four year honors college experience. I have talked to several current students there, and they all love it and love the opportunities it has provided them with. I will likely be attending in the fall.
@applicant42 what is your SAT score and where are you from? i am currently a junior in high school and want to know my chances of getting in to the honors college at rutgers as well
Honors College classes and requirements are more intensive and demanding than honors program. There is a forum required for freshmen where you need to design a project for the community and if your project wins over your class, you compete with other winners. The top winner and runner-ups get funded for development by industries. This is required of every student and taken either in the fall or spring semester. Research in your field is required for graduation. There are several opportunities that are only available to Honors college students including having the Honors college professors and dean having apartment in the Honors College dorm most of which have open door policy. I’ll say with the location (Johnson and Johnson, PSE&G, Merck headquarters within the campus), there is a lot of job opportunities. Carrying the Honors College name when applying for a job or graduate school has to have some weight. Remember, you are one of only 500 students invited to this program. You have to be invited. You cannot apply and you have to enter in the freshman year. No transfer students are allowed.
