How favorable is job experience?

I've been told that working a summer job is worthless to competitive schools, as well as jobs that are worked throughout the school year.
I find this particularly troubling since I've been scrambling the past two years for 15 hours a week, working throughout school and balancing academia, all to have been informed by multiple people that colleges won't consider this when evaluating my application.

Is this true? or should I maintain the hopes that working during the school year will aid my search for acceptance letters?

tl;dr - Does maintaining great grades while working 15 hours per week offer a beneficial quality as an applicant to competitive schools?

tl;tl;dr - Does having work experience matter at all?
