I read some review that says Williams have awsome housing facilities. Is this true?

Do freshmen share a room or all have single?

Do freshmen have access to private bathrooms?

Do freshmen have access to private showers?

1.About 55 percent of freshmen have doubles. 45 percent have singles.
2. Most of the freshman share a bathroom with four to six other people.
3. Most of the freshman share showers with four to six other people.

No. There are many bathrooms situated throughout the dorms. They are small and private. They have one toilet and one shower apiece, except for the basement where they have a big restroom with numerous stalls and several showers.

I think the dorms are considered excellent compared to many other colleges but they are dorms. My son had a very nice and spacious double the first year and singles ever since. One reason is that at Williams off campus housing is very limited and most students live on campus for all the time they are in Williamstown. The college pays a lot of attention to housing and matching of roommates for the first years. To sum up they were far better than many other colleges we visited. Many college tours will not even show you dorms and we can guess why.

My son had a single in Williams C. His room was small, but it had a great view and it was all his. He loved it! Right next door, his two suitemates shared a somewhat bigger room, still cramped though. The common area for the three of them was a fairly large room (I'm guessing here 12' x 12'? Big enough for two sofas, refrigerator, and storage shelves) that they used for socializing and overflow for gear that didn't fit in their rooms. They shared a good sized bathroom with three people from the suite nextdoor. (Yes, the showers are private.)

I think the entry system at Williams is definitely one of its great strengths. Kids have an instant social group of about 20 other first years from day one so no one gets left out for meals and a whole range of activities. Most entries have parallel set ups on either side so in addition to your entry there's a lot of interaction with others. You meet a lot of kids, fast. There's always something going on in one of the common rooms and if you want privacy, you still have your own space.

All firstyears are assigned an "entry". There are several variations on the suite arrangement -- some have bigger rooms, some smaller; some kids choose to move one student into the common room so everyone has a single; some are vertical in arrangement, some are horizontal.

The Junior Advisors provide advice -- both mundane and philosophical --and organize social activities for their group. My son had wonderful suitemates and wonderful JA's. From what I understand this is not an unusual experience at Williams.

krona, welcome to this board. What year is your son?

Fireplace Use
If, during the year, you do use a fireplace, be sure you use it properly. Most importantly, be sure the flue is open and you use the screen. If you are unsure of how to work a fireplace, please check with someone who does. The College does not supply firewood.

Some dorms have fireplaces? Which buildings?

I don't think any frosh dorms have fireplaces (until about 10 years ago the frosh quad did I believe). There are some upperclassmen dorms with them but I'm not sure if you're able to actually use them (despite what the housing website says).
