I got a letter in my mail today from the college, and it said "Fewer than 1% of all college-bound seniors are getting this letter." The stuff they said about the college sounded really prestigious, but when I looked it up online it said 81% of people that apply there get accepted. At the same time, it said that Embry-Riddle can be compared to colleges like Harvard and Stanford. So my question is, exactly how good of a school is Embry-Riddle, and can it be compared to ivy leagues / top universities?

fewer than 1% of all the college bound seniors are getting this letter because they randomly picked 1% of high school seniors to send that too? It’s not a very good school overall, doesn’t even compare to ivy league schools or even above average schools.

oh well it said after that, “We selected you based on your interests and your record of achievement in the classroom and on the national exams.” so i dont think it was random…

yeah you’ll get a lot of mail telling you that you’re special. They probably want to raise their number of applications received which may decrease the admissions rate.

ahh haha ok yea that makes sense i guess

Wikipedia says its Aerospace Engineering program is good, but it is not ranked in the USNWR engineering ranking.

yes it is: [Undergraduate Engineering Specialties: Aerospace / Aeronautical / Astronautical - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-aero)

but you’re right, in the overall rankings for engineering, Embry Riddle is not ranked.

Do you want to be a pilot? If so, Embry-Riddle is a great choice (something like a quarter of all commercial pilots in the US are ERAU grads). If not, then look elsewhere.

Lets put it this way, I am pretty familiar with most colleges and I never heard of it.

Good for Aero, not really known for anything else.

^ Extremely good for aeronautical science. Not to confused with aerospace engineering.

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus offers majors in aerospace engineering (ranked #1 in its category by US News and World Report for ten years in a row), aeronautical science (professional pilot) and many other aviation- and aerospace-oriented majors. The “fewer than 1%” were not picked randomly but rather according to academic performance and potential interest in programs we offer - such as engineering. I wonder about the criteria one poster used when posting “not a very good school.” These boards can be helpful, but remarks without data tend to confuse and bias readers unnecessarily. We are highly specialized and that is most likley one of the reasons we are not as well known as some other schools who appeal to a more broad audience. I do work for the university so I wanted to correct some of what I thought to be inaccurate here. While boards like this can be helpful to students who are seeking college options, it is highly advisable to contact any school you may be interested in directly to ensure that the info you get is correct. And try to talk to the students and graduates from any school to get information from many perspectives.

If you’re going into aerospace engineering or want to be a pilot, there’s nowhere better

Another good alternative if you are interested in aviation is University of North Dakota.

It is great for commercial aviation.

Other schools with aviation programs include:

University of North Dakota
University of Illinois
Western Michigan University
Middle Tennessee State University
Purdue University

This is with the not so minor caveat that the ranking refers to colleges that do not have a PhD program. If you were to include ALL universities Embry-Riddle would not be in the top 100 in aerospace engineering. if you want to be a pilot great school, to be an engineer not so great. They don’t even have a single member of the faculty in the NAE.

According to the latest CDS for the Daytona campus:
-57% 6 year graduation rate
-71% retention rate after the first year.
-460-580 25-75 SAT CR
-490-630 25-75 SAT math

Based on these objective criteria alone, it would only be fair to characterize ERAU as a “not very good school”.

^ This data does NOT say ERAU is not a good school, but that it doesn’t attract the top students.

^^Well, as a tuition-paying-parent, I’d like to think that it attracts some ;)

Well. Its very easy to get into but its very hard to pass. You have to get a 70% in class to pass and thats only a C. I would say overall its not a good school, but its one of the good schools when it comes to flying and Aerospace Engineering/Science. They have also introduced Commercial Space Operation courses which I believe no other university offers. If you pass out form Riddle a job is almost guaranteed. The school has its name out there.
