how good is the med program?

is the feinberg school competitive with the likes of ivies and such? and if i transfer to another grad school, how good is the pre-med program at northwestern and its rates of acceptances? thanks for any help!

People usually don't do undergrad and grad school at the same university. It's not like "transferring." Also, most of the most competitive med schools aren't Ivy League universities.

The acceptance rate to med school is over 80%.

HPME is amazing, just super hard to get into. But if you're into med you should look into it...

this might be a stupid question, but what's HPME?

I think it stands for Honors Program in Med Ed, but I'm not sure. Anyway, you apply separately for it, and it's very selective... if you get in, you do 3 years of undergrad med at NU. All you have to do is maintain a certain GPA in your science classes and a certain overall GPA. As long as you do this, you are automatically "accepted" into NU's grad medical school. So it is like a 7-year program at NU that guarantees you a spot in a great med school.

Right. Let me clarify two things though: most often, you hear people say Feinberg is a top-twenty med school. It's supposed to be very good.

HPME is indeed what you said; only "undergrad med" is a little vague. You can do any NU major whose reqs you can fullfil in 3 years. Well, yeah, sure you need to have taken all bio and chem required by Feinberg by the end of your 3rd year.

Lastly, JackJackson, this figure is ridiculous. For the worst (if you can even use this word of course) medical schools, 80% might be the norm.

Here's two real facts:

At the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, for example, only 2% of the total number of applicants matriculated (104 out of 5,708); at Tufts University, 2% (169 out of 8,368).

Go figure.

oh thanx dfleish that's really cool. do you know what the requirements are for applying and exactly how selective it is? another question: can i complete the program but go somewhere else? i'm thinking of going to duke for grad but i'm not sure since lorddragon said nu is good enough.

lorddragon04, the overall acceptance rate into med school in general is below 50%. Above 80% is a very good acceptance rate.

jackjackson and lorddragon are talking about two different things.

jackson is talking about placement into med school (meaning the % of students who get into at least one med school over students who applied to med school). This number is important in determining how successful students from a specific university are in getting into med school (any med school, regardless of how good/bad the med school is).

lorddragon is referring to the percentage of people who can attend a specific med school over the total applicants. The numbers for U of C (104 out of 5,708) indicate that there are 5708 applicants fighting for only 104 spots. This shows how difficult it is to get into a top-notch med school.

dittogal, I don't know specifics, but I'm pretty sure you have to apply to even be able to apply. Then they narrow it down and there's a rigid interview process... maybe 100 kids or less are admitted? It's very, very harsh. I can ask my roommate about it later, he's in it.

Also, I am fairly sure it's a strictly NU program- you are committing your 7 years to NU and nothing else, as far as I know.

i heard this somewhere but is it true that undergrad doesn't matter and I could go to any top 50 school and still be good and not even do pre-med? hah this makes my choice a bit easier. dfleish thanks for asking and thanks to everyone else for helping! you guys are just dandy lol.

one more question (then i'm finished, i promise haha)

for grad school i'm thinking stanford, duke, washington u and my personal favorite, yale. which one of these schools as an undergrad seems best?

-Notre Dame
-Northwestern
-Amherst
-UCal Berkeley
-U of Virginia
- Vanderbilt

Thanks for all the help guys!

lorddragon, look at the poster's question. Go figure.

dittogal, I would pick Berkeley or UVa. Of course, I kind of like the big public school feel and sports etc. Notre Dame would probably fit this mold, but I'm not really interested in attending a religious school (but I'm Catholic so it wouldn't be a huge deal).

thanks guys! yea my two choices out of those are UVa and Notre Dame but I was also wondering which schools had the best admission rates onto the grad schools that I listed above. Is there a website where you could get this rates? anyone know?
