63% med school acceptance rate...bad?

Hey all! I'm applying to Northwestern and planning on being a pre-med (I'm applying to the HPME, but this questions pertains to if I don't get into that). Anyway, I got something from them that said they had a 63% med school acceptance rate, which is above the national average but still pretty low compared to other good schools I've been looking at.

Can anyone commend on this? I'd appreciate it because NWern is one of my favorite schools aside from this troubling statistic.

Many factors may contribute to this number. First, NU's pre-med curriculum is very rigorous (and a great academic challenge for those up to it) so many pre-med's GPAs aren't exactly stellar. As an HPME applicant, you probably can handle the curriculum well. Also, other schools may screen their applicants before they apply to med school through a pre-med committee, which will raise their med school acceptance rate because only the students they think will be accepted can apply. Moreover, just because you aren't accepted one year does NOT preclude re-applying. Applying to med school is very different from applying to college. You can apply more than once, and in fact there is an increasing trend of non-traditional applicants (aka applicants in their late 20s or 30s and re-applicants) applying and being accepted to med school. Therefore, it is not the end of the world if you aren't accepted right after college - many pursue a post-bac degree or get some real world experience.

There are quite a few pre-meds at NU so you wouldn't be alone. NU's a great school and it ultimately is up to YOU as to whether or not you are in that 63%. Good luck!

(And good luck with HPME! I love it, it's a great program!)

Where are you getting 63%??? The NU viewbook says the number is 82% accept rate, which is not too shabby.

^^I'm with that one. I've heard around 82%....if it's 63 that doesn't sound right at all....

(yeah that number does seem a little low for Northwestern, but I assumed it was right...is it?)

I thought it was low also...but I just saw 63% in Fiske's guide too.

"The abundance of preprofessionals has added to Northwestern's image as "young corporate America," and the acceptance rate for medical school applicants is 63 percent while that of the graduates at schools of business and law hovers around 90 percent"

Post #2 by Sam Lee, he knows his stuff. Viewbook and everything I've seen is in the low 80s, though it is interesting NU doesn't have this data posted anywhere....
