I'm interested in the medical field, hopefully as a doctor or RN. The Health Sciences program really intrigues me since its especially for students pursuing a career in the medical field, but I'm hearing around that UCR has a better premed program and overall is better with its sciences. I don't know or at least have not found out yet about any program at UCR especially for students interested in the medical field, so I guess I'm deciding between UCR (supposedly better premed) and UCSC (program esp. for medical). What can you tell me?

Anyone? If no one will speak out on UCSC for its sciences and entering the medical field…then this makes me really question how good UCSC would be for my desire of going into the medical field …

I don’t know a lot of people who are premed and going to UCSC. Frankly, I don’t know anyone. I’ve heard UCSC was great for biological/engineering majors.

Honestly, Riverside might be a better pick. It just sucks because it’s like…in Riverside.

i am not going into medicine but i am a bio major. I don’t think ucsc is the best for medicine, there is def other uc’s with better programs such as ucsd and ucla. but when it comes to bio research (whether it be in environmental or molecular) ucsc has AMAZING research opportunities. you get to do a lot more at ucsc as an undergrad than you do at other uc’s for certain research projects. but they do have a new program…
[Biological Sciences at UC Santa Cruz: Health Sciences Degree](http://www.biology.ucsc.edu/program/hlth.html) that… “The health sciences major is designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and satisfies the admission requirements for U.S. medical schools. Health sciences students participate in a formal internship at local health care clinics, which is excellent preparation for health care work. The program also provides rigorous training in the basic sciences, elective courses related to human health, Spanish-language proficiency, and a course in conversational Spanish for healthcare workers.” I got this in an email today from… the department of molecular, cell and developmental biology from ucsc. so med school is def a possibility after sc.

Health Sciences is becoming one of the most popular majors at UCSC. I have several friends who are taking it and they seem to like it. People tend to say they like the course structure as it prepares them for the medical exam, but it can be a little difficult because of o chem (you can’t really escape that at any UC).

You have to do the research on the UC though. If you are relying on people to post on a forum so you can find out how good a program is, then you really should find other means of research (replying to your 2nd post)
