How Good is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for Electrical Engineering?

I recently got interviewed for grad EE program in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Being that I go to college in CA, I am not really familiar with EE colleges other than Berkeley and Stanford (MIT being exception).

How prestigious or rigorous is UIUC in EE? Are they very selective?

Thanks!

From my knowledge UIUC is a very good engineering school in general. Not exactly sure on the specifics of the EE program. I’d say it is pretty rigorous, and the selectivity of UIUC’s engineering school is fairly more so than the university itself.

I’d rank it in the top 10

It seems to appear consistently in the top 10 in rankings, sometimes in the top 5. Berkeley, Stanford, and MIT are some of the only departments to be consistently ranked a little bit higher. This group of schools does a lot of collaborating, and seem to think well of each other.

Now what does that mean? It means that they have a lot of prestige, and a decent level of rigor, and are pretty selective. The most important things for an incoming grad student is that they have a larger than usual number of “top” faculty, and are good at getting money for research - this means that you should have good funding for your studies and research, and good placement opportunities when you graduate, when compared to most schools.

Who do you want to work with at Illinois?
