How hard is ap bio?

If you have never taken a biology course before how hard would ap bio be with the labs and test and all that stuffs?

Not very hard at all, its just a lot of work and memorization. However, the actual work is very time consuming, but this depends on your teacher/school of course.

Hard. It’ll take a lot of time.

I’ve primarily heard AP Bio was very simple. I’ve heard it called “science for the history student” a lot because it’s all memorization. I haven’t taken bio since my freshman year in high school, but this is just what I’ve heard.

It’s really not hard, but it is a lot of work. Our class read through the entire Campbells book, and the labs/tests were a joke after reading through that. Even the AP test. That being said, it did require lots of reading each night, so be prepared for that.

uhhh…I took it as a freshmen and got a 5. It’s not that bad to independent study, but get ready for a lot of emotional stress. I guess taking it at school would be easier IF the school offers a good teacher. :)

Emotional stress? What do you mean by that??? I’m taking it this year along side AP USH.

Are these 2 websites good to prepare for Ap bio >

[Biology Outlines | Course-Notes.Org](Outlines | CourseNotes)

and

[Biology Study Guides - SparkNotes](Biology Study Guides - SparkNotes)

or should i just stick back to reading 5 steps to a 5?

I’ve always used barrons, but thats just me.

Probably the least conceptual out of all the science APs (well i don’t count environmental sci as a science ap)

The memorization is harder for some but its very do-able. Honestly i didn’t really study for the course or the test and still got a 5.

Your teacher’s pace also greatly effects how much you’ll have to study on your own. The majority of the AP Bio teachers out there never gets to all of the stuff in time.

People will say there’s a lot of memorization involved but I posit it’s significantly less memorization than one thinks if one knows the underlying concepts. It’s generally pretty intuitive, in that the bio you learn will match up with your expectations and will be able to explain stuff you already knew yet couldn’t explain. A strong chemistry background will definitely help.

For me the hardest parts were kidneys (although if I thought about it long enough I could somewhat derive what molecules would leave the tubes where), cellular respiration and photosynthesis (because there is so much to learn and they share similar processes), and plant structure (this was mainly memorization for me).

Plant hormones, Animal classification, plant classifications, anatomical structures, immunological response, they were all hella annoying to study, the bio chem stuff i was ok with, since they were slightly more intuitive. But for the most part, i found biology to be devoid of complete conceptual awareness, since 95% of the things you study are gross oversimplifications of their real forms, Unlike Chem and Physics, where the underlying concepts and laws still govern more complex ideas, and you can build on previously learned ideas throughout the course.

Though I think i over-prepped because I was studying hella hard for SAT II BIO, but on the AP bio test, the test was very easy.

Thanks guys. But also are those 2 websites i posted above any good to preparing for ap bio?

If your class uses the Campbell Biology Concepts and Connections book (with the pelican), use the online site. I took ap bio this past year (got a 5) and my teacher highly recommended this site, because it has quizzes, activities, and animations that will be a great addition to your studying (and really helped me).

It’s not that bad. My school (at the time) did not offer an AP Biology course so I self-studied while in Honors Biology. Used Barron’s, took the test, got a 5. You’ll do fine if you devote the necessary time to studying. The material itself isn’t that difficult.

AP Biology is not difficult to manage for a first-time biology student, provided that the individual is willing to invest enough time into it. Study, outline the chapters, take practice exams, and regularly review the material in order to ensure optimal results.

Not difficult in terms of being able to grasp most concepts, but the material tends to be extremely dense, so that’s where major time commitment comes in. But other than, I found it to be fairly manageable. Just be sure to review everything periodically because it is easy to forget a lot of it.

It’s really tough. 84 minutes of instruction per day, 2 text readings with corresponding (pain in the ***) assignments due weekly, countless extra help sessions and the marvelous Cliffs review book earned me a 5. It was my first AP and it was really intense. But it was manageable with time, prioritizing, motivation and a real interest in the subject. I loved AP Bio and glad it popped my AP cherry =D
