I am a sophomore and am considering taking it my junior year. I am decent at math but am a slow learner in that subject, which means that math is difficult when it doesn’t immediately come to me (so I seem like I’m behind when I’m in class) but have a very good understanding of it after an hour or so of diligent studying (and I get the same or almost the same scores as the smartest people in my class). Would AP Stats be hard for me, and is there a lot of homework and studying involved in that course?
@needtosucceed27 In my school, AP Stat is taught by one teacher. She follows the textbook a lot but frequently points out common errors students make on the AP test, which is very helpful. She assigns plenty of homework, but no one (including me) does any of it. Despite that, everyone is doing very well on the exams she gives us because we study the textbook carefully.
My question is, why do you want to take AP Stat? Is it for the AP credit? Are you really interested in the curriculum? What other classes could you be taking instead?
I would concentrate on Alg/Geometry/Alg2/Precalc/Calc sequence over Ap stats
AP Stats is the one math class in high school that requires me to put a lot of time into it. You really have to understand all the topics in depth and do the study guides and do the problems. I can cram studying for AP Calc BC in one night and still do well on the test but I can never do that for AP Stats. If you think that you can commit a lot of time to statistics and make sure to never cram, then you should definitely take it! You seem very hard working so I’m positive you’ll do excellent in that class
As someone who HATES math, I loved AP Stats. I took it three years ago, as a junior in high school, and I found that it is just a core set of equations. The bulk of statistics is really about logic and writing. However, my more math-savvy classmates didn’t like statistics and some of them did poorly because it didn’t click for them the way that “normal” math did.
@justinhadley That’s really interesting lol. Never heard of that before
I think AP Stats is pretty easy, but at my school, it’s actually considered one of the hardest APs. I do well in the class (A) but my percentage is lower than in other APs, even though math is my strongest subject. The class does have a lot of work, and despite being “math,” there is a lot of writing, especially in later units. A lot of kids in my school are failing the class because there are certain sentence structures to memorize, etc. I’d talk to someone in your school who has taken it before and ask for their opinion. It really varies from school to school.
