How hard is Fordham based on

Grades (is it hard to keep a good GPA)

Coursework and Homework

Scheduling

1 - 10 scale. 10 = difficult, 1 = ez

1) 9. No free A's. Or B+
2) 7. Not much homework, but you can fall behind QUICK.
3) 1. Very flexible

Yeah, there are very very strict anti grade inflation measures imposed on Fordham College. It is mandated by the dean that the average grade not exceed a B- and should stay around a C+. On the other hand CBA does not impose these limits, but that doesn't mean that they are easy either. You have to work any where you go in Fordham.

it depends really what you're studying and the amount of credits you come in with. if you get the right professors your classes can be easy and yet very valuable at the same time. i have to agree that most of my professors don't collect most of the hw. it's just there for your knowledge and to help you to learn the material. just make sure to get the readings done for the classes you need to get the readings done for (some classes will say read pages x to y but in reality you get nothing of that b/c the professor goes over it in class anyways).

as for scheduling. wednesday is notorious for being an off day for most students. that's just how many of them like to schedule it. usually the classes can be scheduled in this manner:
MF or TF (1hr and 15 mins each session)
TWF (50 minutes each session)
or a single session (which are usually night classes) on any day of the week

you could schedule all your classes in two day which is pretty sweet if you can handle that. or you can schedule all your classes in 3 days. it really just depends on how you like to take them.

Yep....all true. Depends on the profs you get. Some kids FLEE like a flock of birds the first week of classes when they get a hard prof......and head for the exits and sign up for easy classes.

But the STRONG students hang in there. Some profs KNOW this and INTENTIONALLY scare the weak students off...they dont WANT them in their class anyway...they only want serious students. Doesnt mean you can get an A if you stick around.....no...a B is considered EXCELLENT scholarship from them. So if you are superficial and want only a high GPA so you can get that job on Madison Avenue in marketing....well....you decide.

But if you are after SERIOUS intellectual challenge....then hang in there with the hard profs..and you will profit.

There are professors out there with PhD's and you wonder, "How did you get in HERE?" But that is true at even Harvard.

that is life. Is it fair? No.

Most classes are late morning and afternoon as MOST kids stay up until 200 am studying or socializing.

But if you party you will get behind and be GONE! Trust me.

The best part about Fordham is that it has a SUPERB reputation with employers.....who LOVE Fordham grads for their work ethic and personal ethics. So GPA, while important, is not the ONLY factor in getting a job.

CBA is a tad bit easier. But its not a skate either.

You will write a LOT of papers. You will have lots of homework and lots of stress. But that is college.

The hardest part is the dorms. They are crazy. But that is true at EVERY college in the US. So study in the Walsh Library.

Some kids in college MUST read nightly and study hard....they have to do it to "bank the info". Other kids can skate and take an exam and score very high......its just who they are....ditto in Med School and Law School.

They are out there.

CBA kids tend to party less.....accounting types and such....from what I hear.

But you do what is best for YOU and how you perform the best.

Lack of sleep catches up with you FAST...so beware.

Good luck.

yeah if i go to fordham i will be in CBA

you can bank on this. you'll be taking 5 classes every semester as opposed to 4 classes on avg which Fordham College students normally take. See in Fordham College graduation is more dependent on the number of credits. Where as in CBA you can't graduate unless you have all required classes done. For the most part classes are 3 credit courses.

Lets not get carried away, it is not that difficult.
Generally speaking homework is very light, and if your the type of person who retains information the first time around you'll have more free time then you know what to do with.

It is on the Fordham website that they "would like all classes to be curved to a C+" though I have a hard time believing that this actually happens. If you look at your ranking, the truth comes out-- generally speaking, at Fordham, if you have a 3.2 or so, that only puts you in the top 40% and 3.0 is barely the top half. That definitely doesn't sound like deflation to me if 50% (or over 50% depending on the class) has at least a B avg.

Generally speaking, you have to work fairly hard though, to be honest, I expected to work a lot harder (I'm a junior and have started the classes for my major-- these classes, while interesting, still aren't harder than intro. classes I had fresh. yr.).

You get a solid education here, though I'm not sure it's worth 45,000 a yr. The city is a bonus though, being from the area, it's not as much of a bonus had I lived in, say, Cali.

interesting perspectives

any other comments

I have no trouble getting As. I have all As except for one course which I got an A-. You should not worry about any curve too much. I do have a lot more papers to type than tests to take but that is because most of my professors prefer that. It does not mean the majority of the professors at Fordham do not give out tests though.

Most of my courses only have about 3-5 large assignments every semester. A lot of them have group work and discussions. A few require presentations.

I found that most professors like to see students interested in their course, not simply motivated and doing well academically. Having good relations with them is a plus.

how tough do they grade papers

Compared to other schools, how hard is it to get REALLY good grades at Fordham?

on papers.. it depends on the professor. I'd say its average difficulty. You need to know how to work the system and what the professor expects out of you.
Regarding essays, you'll have to adapt and learn to take on different styles of writing. If you can do that well, you should have no problems getting great grades on your papers.
Tests: well, my theory is that everyone can get a 100 on a test. If you don't, its probably your fault for not studying enough. Of course there are some prof. that word questions poorly, but you can either talked to prof or you can swallow the loss.

i would like to add that during finals/midterm week, it is absolute insanity. after three years of enduring finals weeks, i can tell you it's been quite the challange. I find that most of the work is crammed during these wks. and it gets very stressful..you will often have multiple papers (some 10-15 pgs each) due on the same day.

i found that the intro classes are much more centered around writing small papers that are due every class (english comp and rhetoric for instance). Upper level classes have a couple of huge papers due at the end. You have to determine what's best for you.

All in all though, I'm still sticking by my previous statement that I expected to work harder here. It's been challanging but I've heard so many stories about college being overwhelming-- it's certainly NEVER been overwhelming.

The level of difficulty depends on the professor. I recommend showing your interest for a particular area in the course you chose. Professors love motivated and interested students. Smile more. Say hello to the professor when you see him/her. Be professional and skilled in the work you do.

any other comments on this subject

would be appreciated

Fordham does have a strict anti grade inflation imposed, and as such would like to see the grades below a B-. I have had professors in this school give me A’s to D’s and although this may seem detrimental to my future in graduate studies, I still seem to love Fordham. There are professors who make it impossible to get anything over a B or C, that’s just the way it is. I was valedictorian of my high school, and it seems now at Fordham that I am just a mediocre student, but I would not trade my life experience for the world. Fordham has great professor’s, a beautiful campus, and smart well rounded students. I would recommend before coming to Fordham, a sharp drop in your GPA. My first semester here at Fordham I had professor’s who gave insane amount of reading, and classwork. Fordham does not play games when it comes to academics. Best of luck to all that apply! Hope to see you in 2010!
