How hard is it for vegetarians...

... to get meals in high school cafeterias?

I am a vegetarian and have been for all of high school. I never really ate lunch at school but recently started and realized that everything has meat in it in our cafeteria. It's weird because we have a very large Indian population which is mostly vegetarian. So mostly, I just buy bosco sticks but it's irritating.

I really don't have much food at home that I can bring to school in snack size.

Does anybody else have this problem and how do you handle it?

I'm not a vegetarian, but I know that my school cafeteria is not the most vegetarian-friendly place in the world. Even if you get the salad, you'd have to pick out strips of chicken and pieces of ham. o.0 I think it's got something to do with my state requiring all school cafes to provide "balanced meals" in all lines.

Yeah same here, we have meat in our salads. And especially after the beef recall I don't know why they don't look into creating more vegetarian dishes.

But, I just talked to some of my friends in the Animal Rights club with me and we're going to petition the administration to give us more options.

I am a vegetarian and it's actually fairly easy at my school. In general, the "specials" that they serve (tacos, pasta, etc.) contain meat in them. However, my school also offers daily salad bars, sandwich bars, soups that don't have meat in them sometimes. There are also various junk foods and snacks offered.

It's actually kind of funny, because our school district once got one of the cases of potentially contaminated beef and sent letters out. I'm pretty sure that itself was enough to make some of the students cut their consumption of the cafeteria meats. I felt pretty fortunate to be a vegetarian.

My suggestion: make yourself a nice sandwich in the morning.

blah, it's sort of a double edged sword.my school used to have REALLY bad-for-you meat stuff, then got petitioned and got uber-healthy, all vegetarian food that was uber expensive (it costs $4 to get even a cold meal, and that's the absolute minimum...it's at least $10/day if you get a drink and a snack

^^ (To sevitagen)So did ours.

The only problem is when I carry around sandwiches in my backpack they get smushed and lots of times fall out all over my backpack. My locker is in another building so I can't leave it there and get it later.

If you do NORMAL vegetarian meals, they are cheaper than meat based meals. We don't want fancy stuff, just normal things like vegetarian tacos or vegetarian whatever the meal of the day is.

Put your it in a small, flat tupperware box if you are really that concerned about a smushed sandwich, lol.

I mean, I suppose if you really wanted, you could lobby your high schol administration to provide more vegetarian meal options, but that could take over a year to actualize. In addition, you would have to be pretty persistant, because if your high school is anything like mine, they will not do anything without people pushing them into it. For me, it's really not worth the trouble.

I'm a vegetarian. After about a week of nothing but bagels, I just stopped buying from my cafeteria. It's simpler that way - there aren't enough vegetarians in my school for the administration to care. Most of the food is pretty disgusting, though, so I'm not alone. A lot of people just bring in snacks (power bars, pretzels, apples, etc.) and then eat a real meal at home.

^^ I do that during most of the year, but during the 4 month of plays I can't go home after school until about 9 or later. That's the only time where it hits hard because it's too long to go without a real meal.

Besides, we have over 6,000 students in our school. I'm sure at least a couple hundred are vegetarian, if not more. That seems like it should be enough to give us some options.

Wow, I didn't know that other schools had bosco sticks too.

Why don't you talk to your SGA and principal to see about getting more vegetarian food at the caf?

Not to sound stupid... but what's an SGA?

Haha...tech...well, when we're not there, I'm sure nobody'll mind if you sneak in a couple of our cheese balls during breaks.

Anyway, as a member of the burgeoning Indian vegetarian population, I would like to see more options, but I wouldn't buy them anyway, and I don't know many vegetarians who would start buying school meals if there were more options. Like sevitagen says, just use a flat tupperware container for now.

We have salads and pizza everyday, but the specials usually have meat (lasagna, calzones, tacos...)

proletariat2, you should come tomorrow after school to help start the petition. I know a lot of Indians who, even though they don't eat there, agree that the school should at least provide some more options.

Where is it?

I really should PM you, but I'm too lazy.

Those are the BEST. I wish I could eat them for lunch every day, but my school only sells them on random days :(.

^^ They're good, but not every day. I tried that last year and couldn't even stand the sight of them by March.

Although my school only offers lunch 3 times a week, there's always a vegetarian choice. But since you have to order it a week before, I've never eaten anything there. It also looks and smells pretty weird, so no, although they offer vegetarian meals at my school, it still isn't what I would call a good choice.

We have a salad bar! Too bad they NEVER change the options.
