How Hard Is It to Get into Investment Banking?

Hey fellow CC'ers!

I am currently an econ and math (with an actuarial specialization) double major with a minor in management at a top 10 school in my major departments, and I was wondering how tough it was to get into investment banking, especially to get a buisness analyst position?

I am personally more than glad to work more than 100 hours a week and don't mind the investment banking lifestyle at all. Besides English, I know German, Danish and Albanian (and soon Spanish), and I believe I will thus be a good canditate for international work.

Moreover, is UMN TC a target school for investment banks? I see a lot of banks have their recruiting offices in the economics department building in my school, but I just want to be certain.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also, what other factors do investment banks look at when determining who to offer entry level positions (business analyst, ect.) to?

Credit score, GPA are factors also.

What does credit scores have to do with a bank determining whether or not you are offered a position?

You must take out a loan to buy a house.

Given the amounts of money handled by I-bankers, they don’t want to risk someone embezzling funds (they assume embezzlement risks are higher if one has a poor credit history) despite the high salaries of I-banking.

Ah, okay. Now I see why. I just have not heard of anyone mention the necessity of having a reasonable credit score, so that was why I was kind of wondering in the beginning.

Another question. Does the fact that I am a student at UMN TC going to put me at a disadvantage in terms of recruitment?

Well yes, there won’t be as many recruiters as there are at Wharton, Sloan, Ross, Olin, etc…

Wallrus, do you think it would be smarter for me to transfer out of the University then? And are you implying that the UMN TC is not even and should not be considered a target school for I-Banks, or that there are less recruiters compared to other Business schools?

I don’t know about investment banking. I do know that it is not a top business school. I have been enrolled at the UofM since 7th grade and I have never heard of them being known for their business school.

Wallrus, economics and actuarial mathematics is not in their business school. Also, the bank recruitment offices that I saw were all in the Economics Department Building (and their economics department is top 10 in the nation), not in the business school.

How come you have been enrolled at the U since 7th grade by the way? Are you still a student?

I think it would be wise to stay at the U if it is a good fit. I would talk to the bank recruitment offices and ask about their success for investment banking. How to get internships, what GPA is needed, what else they look for… etc… If you find they don’t know much or if the standards are too high, maybe transfer? Not sure. The most important part, however, is getting an appointment.

My brother thought he may want to become a doctor. He never really, and still hasn’t, talked to anyone specifically how he can improve his r

Sounds good. Thanks Wallrus!

If anyone else knows more about investment banking, you’re more than welcome to comment on this thread here.
