The title says it all. I’m a first year accounting major at SDSU. So far, I’m really loving this school. But my dream school is UCSD, and I think I’m going to keep pursuing. I was originally waitlisted and then denied admission during May. I was wondering just how hard is it to transfer from SDSU to UCSD and what must I do in order to do it?
Don’t UCs only allow junior-level transfers?
UC’s take Junior level transfers with 60 semester/90 quarter units. Do you have any AP credit that could be used for some of the transfer requirements?
I would work with a transfer advisor to plan out your schedule.
Check out assist.org to help determine the classes needed to transfer. CSU to UC transfers are a little more difficult than CC to UC.
@Gumbymom I came into SDSU with 23 units, and after 2 semesters and a summer I’ll probably have over 60. Do I have to have 60 before even applying?
No, you need 60 units by Spring 2017 if you are applying for Fall 2018.
The problem’s are:
- UC’s are not as generous with AP credit as the CSU’s so you make not get full credit for the 23 units.
- If you stay at SDSU, not all CSU’s courses articulate with UC courses so you need to cross check the SDSU courses with assist.org.
- You may not be able to finish all the GE/IGETC and major prep courses needed to transfer by Spring 2017.
- You have no college GPA at the moment, so how can UCSD make a decision based on 1st semester of college courses (you update in January), especially since you were not accepted after being waitlisted.
If UCSD is you ultimate goal, I would finish your 1st semester at SDSU, go to a local CC starting Spring 2017 since assist.org will have a list of CC course that will articulate for transfer, get your GE/IGETC and major prep classes completed and apply for the following year. The more courses you have completed toward your major and for transfer, the better position you will be for an acceptance.
Coursework
Track your progress toward meeting UC’s minimum requirements using the Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP).
All units must be completed by the end of spring term, prior to fall admission
Complete a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester (90 quarter) units
Complete the UC-transferable college courses below with a C grade or better in each course. Each course must be 3 semester (4-5 quarter) units.
2 English composition
1 mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
4 courses from at least 2 of the following:
Arts and humanities
Physical and biological sciences
Social and behavioral sciences
GPA
UC San Diego requires a competitive GPA (minimum 3.0) in UC-transferable courses and good academic standing.
Major Preparation
Plan ahead and complete as many courses as possible to prepare for your chosen major. UC San Diego’s academic departments specify courses you must take before you transfer to prepare for upper-division study in your major. See the UCSD General Catalog for a list of major prerequisites or the departmental website for a specific major.
Transfer applicants will not be admitted as undeclared. If you are not admitted to your major, you will not be admitted to the university.
Click here for a list of departments that require major preparation courses for admission. You will be screened for the number of courses completed, the grades earned in those courses and your cumulative GPA.
If you are applying to a capped major (majors with limited enrollment), you are required to complete all lower-division major courses prior to transferring.
General Education Requirements
Complete lower-division GE requirements before transferring to enjoy more flexibility in selecting courses once you enroll at UC San Diego and to reduce your time to graduation.
Each of UC San Diego’s six colleges has its own GE requirements, so keep that in mind when choosing your community college courses.
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of California community college courses that meet UC San Diego lower-division general education (GE) requirements at UC San Diego’s Muir, Marshall, Roosevelt, Sixth and Warren colleges. Revelle College requires students with IGETC to complete these additional requirements before transfer, or while enrolled at UC San Diego: 3 courses in mathematics and 5 courses in natural science.
If you plan to follow the IGETC, consider:
partial IGETC is also possible – this is useful if you’ve chosen a pre-major that requires a lower-division sequence of coursework once you get to UC San Diego;
following IGETC can make your path to graduation easier – once you transfer, you can concentrate on your major field of study.
To find out what courses are in the IGETC, contact the transfer center at your community college and check the ASSIST website for details on IGETC course agreements.
Sorry I meant to say you need 60 semester/90 quarter units completed by Spring 2017 for Fall 2017. You are better off waiting to apply for Fall 2018.
I think you need to give SDSU a chance since it is only been a month. What major do you plan to transfer into at SDSU since they have no business school?
