I’m currently going to a community college in Virginia, and after switching majors a million times I’ve decided I’m going to major in physics, and would like to transfer to UVA in the fall of 2017.
I currently have a 3.922 GPA and have already taken physics 1 and 2, all math up to diff eq, some humanities, a chem class, some english classes and 3 engineering classes (I don’t know if having gotten A’s in hard engineering classes will help me even if they aren’t in the degree I’m applying for). I’ll have completed all of the transfer requirements except for the foreign language requirement which I’ll be off by one or two semesters. I’m also a math and science tutor at my college’s tutoring center, and I know professors and people that can write me amazing letters of recommendation.
How likely is it that I’ll get accepted, and should I even worry about getting accepted as long as I keep my GPA up?
Oh yeah and what are some things I can do to increase my chances of getting accepted other than getting all A’s? I took the SAT back in high school and got a 1600, which isn’t very good but I didn’t even study and never really tried in high school; I would definitely study a ton if I retook it, which I’m really thinking about doing.
The Dean tweeted a while ago that transfers have a much easier chance of getting in compared to first year students! Your GPA seems really good and just make sure you are taking classes to get the credits you need in order to transfer.
Oh yeah, one thing I might also add is that my high school GPA is terrible; I did not care about getting good grades in high school, and have just recently started realizing that school is extremely important, hence my high gpa at CC:)
Hopefully you will have enough credits so that they will look only at college GPA. I just realized that the above is transfer information for engineering school, physics might be different, but you can call and find out specifics.
Don’t miss deadlines, make sure you fulfill all requirements and maybe you can even get a transfer scholarship.
Yeah I’ll have close to 90 so I’m not even gonna worry about my high school gpa lol. I’ve already checked all of those out with my advisor, thanks though!
Just found out that the average transfer GPA is a 3.5, so I should be fine.
