I’m wondering just how hard it would be to get admitted to Cal poly SLO as a transfer student from a CCC? If you take all the courses listed here at a CCC https://admissions.calpoly.edu/cscsea.html plus the golden four, plus some more GE courses to get to 60 credits.
It seems super competetive.
I have also read that it’s hard for transfer students to graduate in 4 years, is that true? Is going to Cuesta College gonna boost my chances? One CS course is required and the other two are “desired”.There are no articulation between Cuesta College and those 2 desired CS courses, is that a problem? Then I would only take one CS course and that’s the required one.
CS has a projected transfer admit rate of 8% so very competitive. SLO does accept many “local” transfers, so going to Cuesta will help but definitely no guranteee especially if you going for only 1 class. Make sure you have a high GPA and some CS related EC’s to improve your chances. Also make sure you have some solid backup schools on the list.
@Gumbymom Thank you! I just found out that Cuesta had articulation agreements for the two “desired” CS courses too. So that would be a total of three CS courses taken at CC. So if I complete all the required and desired courses plus the golden four with a high GPA, then I would be considered as a strong candidate? Do CPSLO care if I haven’t completed all the GE courses at the time of admission? It seems pretty impossible to finish the desired and required major courses and all the GE requirements during four semesters. Because after completing the desired and required major courses you’re at 43 credits then add the golden four which is 12 credits for a total of 55 credits.
I would probably join a CS club or something similar. My backup schools would be SJSU and SDSU.
I would be an international student and would like to have a well thought out plan before I go if I decide to go.
Classes seems pretty easy to get at Cuesta too, I checked fall 2016 and none of the classes I would need was full.
You also need 60 credit units to transfer to any CSU. I would work on finishing all the required courses and the Golden Four first, then fill in with the “desired” courses and the other GE’s to make you as competitive as possible. With transfers, GPA will weigh the heaviest, so yes having a high GPA will make you a strong applicant.

Hard to graduate in 4 years as a transfer student? Not at all. I would first focus on a great GPA ( >3.6), then complete ALL of your GE’s. Trust me, you’ll want those out of the way before you transfer; getting GE’s can be very difficult once you’re at Poly. I transferred as an EE in 2014 with a 3.9 GPA and didn’t have any electrical courses completed, but I did have the entire GE sequence completed. Don’t forget about speech either.
It’s taken me 3 years to graduate but only because of the strict order you have to take classes. My last 2 quarters are filled with nonsense classes and 1 EE class.
As a CS with all GEs completed and, if possible, lower div programming courses completed, you could graduate in 2 years. CPE or EE, that would be a different story.
