How hard is it to Transfer to University Park

My D is a freshman at a southern university. She likes it but is thinking that she needs a larger school, with more school spirit etc. We were thinking of Penn State. She had the grades and test scores to apply from high school, she just was positive, at the time that she wanted a southern school. Now she is possibly changing her mind, so we are thinking about Penn State.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to transfer, as an out of stater to University Park? What do they look for? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

UP takes junior transfers (2 years of college coursework completed). To transfer sooner, she would likely have to transfer to a branch campus first and then to UP. I’ve heard of people going straight to UP after less than two years, but I’m not sure how common that is, given how explicitly the website says UP only takes juniors.

@Dungareedoll I got in as an out of state junior transfer. I had a 3.12 gpa and applied for material science and engineering. I heard in general its hard to transfer from university to university but not impossible. I applied as a community college student.

What kind of major is your D looking to pursue once she gets admitted into PSU? Personally, I would not recommend PSU to anyone, especially if the person is out of state.

There are many colleges around the area that are much better and cheaper than Penn State. Why don;t you try Maryland or even Rutgers?

@jpsu11 I’m wondering why you are commenting on a PSU college board if you so dislike PSU? You are new to CC and every post has been against PSU. To make it worse, you are giving out all of the wrong information to people who are genuinely looking for answers. If you have reason or experience or actual factual data to back up your opinions, you certainly have yet to share them.
PSU has a 51% admissions rate vs 65% for Rutgers. You suggest that she try Rutgers or Maryland because they are “cheaper” yet the OOS costs are the same. You keep saying things without backing them up whatsoever. You did so on the other thread as well and I was able to show you, with facts and data, how wrong you were.

OP - Penn State is a terrific school loved by many. But it does have a specific culture and your D would definitely need to like the big school, big Rah-Rah school spirit type of town. If you have any specific questions about PSU, feel free to PM me. My daughter just finished her freshman year and my husband and I are both alumni. I would recommend PSU to anyone. The OOS costs are high, but on par with other big schools OOS costs. Good luck to you in finding the best place for your daughter!
