How hard is Organic Chemistry at UCR?!

I'm going to be a Biology major at UCR this fall, so I'm going to be in CNAS. My cousin told me that one of her friends took organic chemistry and failed the class. So..I'm like "uh..oh" I already knew before that organic chemistry was going to be hard. On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is it? Plus, I'm not a science person so I don't know why I'm majoring in Biology either(so don't even ask). But I do LIKE science, just not chem. Ugh. I like learning Biology though. Which is going to be harder, organic chem or biology? Are the lab reports challenging?

I’m an incoming freshman as well, currently doing summer session. I have two roomates who are also CNAS and are taking organic chem for the summer. They are both 3.5 gpas, and they basically complain on a daily basis about that class. I see them studying for hours each night, and they always come back from class drained. So I’d say its like a 12 on a 1-10 scale. But then again… it is summer which is more condensed.

Organic chemistry is just a very difficult subject for most people. A friend of mine took some organic chemistry classes and she studied for hours everyday and started very intensely studying at least two weeks before the final exam.

I am inclined to say that Biology would be a bit easier. But then again, it can get really complicated.

I was in the same boat as you; I like science – especially Biology – but I have a difficult time with Chemistry in general, let alone Organic Chemistry.

Take the class and see if it’s something you’re really interested in. I figured that if I didn’t have tremendous personal interest in it, I probably wouldn’t do well. So I became an Anthropology/Film and Visual Culture major. :p

Why are you so worried about Organic Chemistry now? You won’t take organic chemistry until your second year, until you finish the Chem1ABC series at least.

Chem112A is not impossible, nothing is, there are just classes that will require more time studying then others.

Oh I didn’t know that I will take organic chem 2nd year…thanks (:
so…I’ll probably taking biology 1st year?

I think you take general chemistry first year

Yes, you will take chem112A your second year. You will be taking chem1a in the fall if you were placed into math8b or higher. After chem1a, you can take bio5a.

Well I am going to be placed in Math8A. So what science course will I be taking this fall?

If you were placed in math8A, you won’t be able to enroll in any science class since all science classes require math8b or greater. I recommend summer bridge, if you really want to take chem1a in the fall. If you can’t do summer bridge, is it too late to take community college classes for you? If none of these are options for you, you will then take chem1a your second quarter.

You can do the summer bridge program and take math8A over the summer, and then chem01 and math8b fall quarter

I figure this is the right thread to ask this in…

I took AP Chemistry as a senior and got a B+/B and a 4 on the AP test. Should I go straight to organic?

i think you still need to take chem

U got a 4 lucky I got a 1 :(

ok, it’s a really bad idea to skip science classes - here are two examples demonstrating why

if you took regular chem in high school

skipping chem001a = you’re f**ked

if you took chem AP and got a 5 in high school

skipping chem001a = you’re still f**ked

science classes are just too hard to skip

yep you really need to take chem in college if your doing chemistry major

chem is a female dog with puppies. IDK how I survived two years of back to back chem classes.

Getting a score of 3 or even 5, will not allow you to skip chem1a. There is no way of skipping chem1a with AP scores.

Hmm, well it looks like I’ll be doing chem1A!! Hopefully, it’ll be a breeze, since I just did the same thing last year. Btw, my major is biochemistry, with intentions of going to med school.

no joke but it seems that half the school is doing bio related stuff with intentions of going to med school

so many people what to be doctors:) Good thing I’m pre law I ll sue them lol jk
