How hard to change colleges?

How hard would it be to apply in the Letters college and transfer to Engineering?

Some say its stupid easy, some say its impossible

Depends on what major you want and how good your GPA is. They also don’t like changes from math to engineering math or physics to engineering physics.

It’s not impossible. I think you need around a 3.5 to have a really good chance of transferring in.

They look at both technical and overall GPA, so if you have a 3.5 because you took a bunch of filler classes but have B’s in Math 53/54, Physics 7A/7B, then you’re probably not going to be okay.

My counselor said the EECS cutoff for people in CoE needed a 3.2 and a number of EECS classes depending on how long you’ve been a student here.

I think anything above a 3.0 in prereqs + a compelling reason is okay :)

My friend tried to transfer into bioengineering and he had around a 3.4~ GPA. He was also finished with all of the math in the first semester but he got rejected.

Interesting. That might be because BioE is more impacted. I had a friend who transfered into Mech E with ~3.5.

Did he do any of the Bio or Engineering reqs? Cause finishing math has nothing to do with BioE…

They need a COMPELLING reason. My friend got like a B- or so in math (which shouldn’t really be relevant to BioE), so I don’t think they care about math. Mostly she was doing around a 3.0~ and got into BioE because she took Bio/BioE courses and LOVED it.

It’s not really about the GPA than about the passion/reasons  They just don’t want people to switch in and then out etc etc.

You have to write a 2-page essay why you want to go into CoE in addition to showing your transcripts. You want to have 3.5 to be safe, but explaining yourself is much more important since fewer than 100 people apply each semester and they actually have the time read through your entire application.

My friend was completing the pre-reqs for bioe, such as physics, chem, bio, etc… I suppose he was late on E7 and E10 and bio seminars, but he was on-track for the science stuff.

The things is, physics, chem, bio etc are general pre-reqs for any science. Did he display any interest that is specific to BioE alone?

Also, the personal statement is SUPER important. They’d rather take someone with a better statement than someone with better grades.
