would a 2300 and above SAT make them overlook (a tiny bit) a somewhat low gpa (such as 3.6, 3.7)

what would they assume from this... smart kid, but slacker?

would a 2300 and above SAT make them overlook (a tiny bit) a somewhat low gpa (such as 3.6, 3.7)

what would they assume from this... smart kid, but slacker?

no it wont make up for it at all.
they dont want slackers.
unless your gpa is low becuz you took very hard classes at a very competitive school...but im assuming its not.

okay, if we're making it personal..

i have a 3.7 gpa at a new england prep school (phillips andover) taking all honors and ap classes (but i'm not a year ahead in math or anything like that) and a 2350 sat

i'm thinking that college will analyze my gpa in context, but it still looks low on the surface

so i'm just asking will seeing the 2350 and 3.7 next to each other warrant some "understanding" from an admissions counselor?

You'll be fine, don't worry, what will happen will happen.

haha ky just wanted to brag, i guess

no, i'm actually very nervous about my gpa

most of the "accepted" ccers have at least 3.9 gpas, and i also have a slight downward trend

i'd really like to hear some helpful insight on this issue if there's any out there...

haha sorry im not trying to make it personal.

as long as you have good grades in context with ur school (for example, what is your rank?) then its fine.

however if you have a low rank and didnt do well in school, SATs wont make up for it at all.

you counselor letter will explain how rigourous your courseload was in comparison to others.

also, is that your weighted GPA?

our school doesn't weight gpas, so the ranking system is somewhat irrelevant, but assuming that most of the top 10% have similarly tough schedules i'm 9th out of 87... not the best but decent?

then again i'm mainly asking for brown, which has always been my dream school, and it will probably be tougher there

Don't worry, you go to a very competitive school, colleges will understand that your gpa represents a tough schedule at a tough school. With that SAT as well as your solid class rank you should be in good standing when applying to Brown.

yeah seriously ive heard your high school is really prestigious, and a 2350?! thats impressive man

thanks everyone, well i guess i'll just submit my apps and see

um you go to andover

3.7 can't be bad

I don't think 3.7 with 2350 screams slacker. Mediocre GPA for Ivy League, but not slacker. 3.3 with 2350 - yeah, slacker.

wat extra currics do u hav

In my opinion, 3.6-3.7 isn't bad. I agree with everyone who said that it depends on the rigor of your courseload. Obviously if you took all of the easy courses it'd be a bit interesting as to why you got a 3.6-3.7 instead of a 3.8, 3.9 or even a 4.0. The 2350 could help. That's a good score so I don't see why it wouldn't help.

Talk to your guidance counselor about it.

If you're attending Phillips Andover, as you seem to suggest, you can relax since the top 50% of a graduating class attend Ivies and other highly selective colleges

P.S. The graduating class is about 240

ky -
if your GC supported your application to Brown you've probably got much better than a decentish chance. Your school provides a fine education as well as GC's with knowledge and connections. Best wishes for the spring.
