Hi,I'm an Indian student I got a very low 11th and 12th grade(first term) gpa but I got a pretty good sat score 2280.will my low gpa ruin my chances?can my sat score compensate for my low gpa ?thanks speedy reply will be highly appreciated

What’s the GPA? Class rank?

What colleges?

In general, SAT scores don’t really compensate for GPA as they’re both important. They want to see that you can succeed at their school. You’ll notice that many schools are SAT optional. I don’t know any that are GPA optional.

Gpa is 3.5 and I’m in the top 5% in my class.(school makes very tough papers to improve performance in the final exams)
Colleges:
Nyu ,carniage Mellon ,ucla,uc Berkeley ,Umichigan Ann Arbor ,Kelly ,Wharton ,Cornell.

It depends on how low your gpa is…like I think a 2.0 for example, would be hard to even out but maybe a 3.0 would be better. I don’t think it really evens out if its pretty low, however, if you can explain why you got a low gpa those years it might be ok. If it was just laziness or not trying your best then it’d be hard to argue your case but if it was because of other struggles like family issues for instance, then you could mention that to colleges. Also, if your gpa has always been low but is improving since freshman year then it would be better than if you did well sophomore year but all of a sudden it dropped 11th and dropped more 12th. Hope this helps.

Thank you,I got a low gpa in 11th and 12th because I got a perfect gpa(cgpa 10) without studying ,so I became overconfident and laid back.

From my own experience, a great SAT does compensate for an average/above average GPA. But it really depends upon the methodology of the particular school being applied to as some really do not like standardized scores and depend more on a continual effort achieving GPA (American University is an example).

GPA should be interpreted in the context of course rigor, class rank, school competitiveness, and the upward/downward trend. If you rank in the top 5% and took difficult classes at a competitive school, a 3.5 GPA could be considered quite good. Whether each college takes that into equal consideration is another matter.

Some state universities report very high average entering GPAs (3.8 - 4.0) in their Common Data Set files (section C12). The most selective private schools generally don’t report any average GPA at all in the CDS. Perhaps they are more inclined to interpret GPA in light of the factors I mentioned.

That could be a weighted GPA that they report.

CHANCE ME PLEASE.thanks a ton

I am also in 12th in a CBSE school. So, I think it would be helpful if u could tell me ur percentage. I think if it is 80-85%+ it shouldn’t be a problem.

Look my 11th grade percentage is 60%
And 12th grade 65%(first term )
Board exams in a month ,hoping for a 90%+

Those percentages are most likely going to be your downfall, especially since all the uni’s u are applying to are very prestigious. Even Purdue, which has very high acceptance rate, requires a bare minimum of 60% in 11th. So, unless u can provide a very convincing reason for ur low marks its going to be hard. Still, give your best and hope for the best. The adcom may overlook ur marks since u are in top 5%. And best of luck for the boards.

BTW, I don’t mean to be rude but is 60% really top 5% in ur school. In my school that would translate to top 60-70%.

Look I’m in commerce section, which doesn’t have very academically inclined students, also our school makes one of the toughest papers in the country, which is mainly done to maximize 12th grade marks and thank you :)

And yes tuition is not an issue.

Oh, so u are top 5% in the commerce section. Ok so, please don’t take this in the wrong way but top 5% in the commerce section though good, doesn’t count for much, as u have have to report ur class rank among all students in 12th. And I understand that the papers are tough in many Indian schools as I am in the same situation. But then u will have to explain it to the university. Frankly speaking though, even if the paper was super hard, getting 75-80% shouldn’t be a problem for u looking at the colleges u are applying too, ur 9th and 10th CGPA and ur SAT score.

The best reason I can give is that I had dislocated my knee in the beginning of 11th grade so I was advised 2 months bed rest and for the 12th grade well ,I was studying for the sat.thats pretty much it .

So, u mean to say u missed school for two months in 11th? Well that can be a valid reason. Studying for SAT though is a poor argument because as u understand, u aren’t the only one who studies for it. U shouldn’t have taken them close to ur school exams. I too did the same mistake with my SAT subject tests.

Yeah I missed 2 months of school, but I don’t think that they’ll buy it,or it make any difference .its not serious enough.

Yes, missing two months of school is legit (make sure your counselor mentions it in his/her recommendation; as for you, you could put it in “additional information”. DO NOT write your essay about it though). Your 60-65 is okay for Indian boards even if it’s not on par with you cgpa10 of course.

Scoring in boards is very easy ,the checking is lenient and we’ve got time to prepare so hopefully I can get a 90+.
