I was almost loosing confidence in me because I took 3 SAT practice tests and there’s no improvement in the scores at all. I almost lost hope…when I came across ur posts! 65 practice tests!
Wow, I liked ur spirit and determination!
Your posts really motivated me. These kind of helpful posts are ought to be posted as you don’t know how much of help it can be to some people without your notice.
Thank you a lot!
THIS IS AMAZING! I don’t know you, but I feel an unexplained feeling of pride in your accomplishment. I know what kind of mindset that takes, and I am blow-away by your work-ethic. You will do well no matter where you go because of your determination. Although I am a big opponent of the SATs for a number of reasons, I’m still very happy for you.
Hi spuding102,
I’m currently a junior (going to be senior in august 2015) who plans to take SAT for the second time in June of this year. The first SAT score from March 2015 was: 670 CR, 700 MATH, and 790 W (score total: 2160.) I’m hoping, and a bit expecting, that score for my next SAT will be higher, since the 700 math was completely due to silly mistakes. During testing, for each 3 math sections I finished all my math questions AND reviewed them about 10 minutes before the proctor called out the time. I usually get 770-800s on most of practice math SAT sections, and I was totally confident, before I got the score back, that I would get 800 for sure (Oh by the way I’m Asian). I have to say that the 790 writing section score was bit of a luck, since I got only 9 on my essay (even though the essay question was pretty easy, I just got nervous I suppose) and missed 1 question for multiple choice.
Sorry, the introduction was a bit long. My question is, do you think that I can make into top schools such as UC Berkeley, NYU, Brown, and even (maybe) Harvard, if I get my score 2300+? Another question is, what were your extracurriculars and class rank for your college application? I’m a bit nervous because although my SAT score is pretty decent, pretty much my only extracurriculars are being class representative for 2 years (leadership position) and being qualified for Kansas State High School Tennis Tournament for 3 consecutive years (I placed 9th one year, which supposedly shows that I was once 9th best tennis player in the state) (of course this implies that I’m in varsity tennis team for 3 consecutive years). My class rank is 2nd or 3rd in a class of 27 students. I take all honors classes, and my schools doesn’t offer any AP classes. I believe that my teacher evaluations will be pretty good, 8-9 out of 10 if I were to grade them. GPA is around 4.3, unweighted 3.95-4.0
With my academic stats, extracurriculars, teacher evaluation, and SAT score of 2300, do you think I can get into either Berkeley, NYU, or Brown? I also plan to take SAT II tests for Korean, Math 2, Physics, and maybe Chemistry. Korean score will be 800 for sure, Math 2 almost certain 800, Physics 730+. Chemistry I do not know because I plan to study over this summer break, and may not even take the test. Please take account of the SAT II tests, for I plan to major in mathematics, physics, or engineering (most likely math). Also, please post your academic stats and your conjecture about how good your personal essay and teacher evaluations were scored. Thank you!
@Grativity For UC Berkeley and NYU you are a shoe in. For the top 10/ivy leagues you are competitive. The trick is to be competitive for all those schools, apply to all of them and hope you get into one. These schools are so big and diverse that you are bound to find things you like about each of them (of course the academics are all top which is the important part). Try to have your SAT scores be above 700 in each section/subject test–below that hinders you. Ideally the higher the better but I can assure you the difference between a 2200 and 2300 for example, is not as large as you may think. As an Asian student, you will need higher scores but shooting for a 2200+ or ideally 2250+ is fine. At that point it comes down to other things. My extracurriculars, like almost everybody, were run in the mill and were nothing special. Go down the list-do you have 1)Test scores 2) grades 3)rigor of curriculum 4)Letters of Rec 5) ECs 6) essays then your good. Your time to shine is your essays because everyone pretty much has the same scores and grades, everyone plays piano, and everyones teacher says they are the best student they ever had. Spend time on your common app essay and don’t settle until it is perfect.
Also interestingly enough, I requested my admissions record from the admissions office so I was able to read my file about 3 weeks ago. My scores (2210 and rank 7/107 or something like that) were rated as standard. My ECs and Essay were also standard. What really helped me was my upward trajectory and my attendance of a sephardic orthodox jewish school since they liked the diversity. Across the board I was pretty much standard in everything though.
@spuding102 do all schools let you request your admissions record?
just the one you attend
Congratulations on your acceptance to Duke!!! It’s everybody’s dream!
That happened like a year ago^
YOU GIVE ME HOPE.
I’m not underrepresented, but I have pretty low sat scores tear
but I am gonna work so damn hard!!! but 65+ tests… oh man
I took my SAT on June 6th. Since then I have been studying, reviewing and practicing 8 hours a day. 4 days later my Math section increases from a 490-510 range to 580-600 range!!! I wish I did this before I took my SAT test!! #-o Once you do enough practice tests you will find the Math Section easier than your Advanced Math Classes in school. And review your Math Vocab from the BB!!!
That’s awesome.
Could you please tell whether your sat score got delayed or not ?
What exactly did you do? In currently stuck at 1950 from a 1750. Need help getting over the hump, all tips appreciated!!
cptjosh787, I really appreciate the advice about practice with the Math. My D is in the same range as you (also took the June 6th test - her second). She did a lot of online prep and even worked with a tutor who also advised that practice will bring up her score. We were disappointed though that her second test resulted in only a 10 point increase, even after much prep and practice (though not nearly as intense as 8 hours a day!) We will have her keep at it, though, for the Oct. retake - third time’s a charm, right??!
Most of the skills will probably be very helpful in the new SAT also.
OMG amazing work this helps and inspires me a lot thanks for the help
I want to take my SAT as a freshmen in high school. I’ve been studying all summer long, and I plan on studying during winter and spring break next year since I’ll be taking the new SAT later in the year. I’m a fast learner who’ll be taking all honors and AP, so just taking those classes alone should suffice for enough practice. I hope to score around 2250 to 2400 (Math shouldn’t be a problem since I’ll be taking PreCalc plus Trig, however I must say I’m currently only scoring around 700 on my CR and W)
Can doing PSAT help with CR sections as well?
can I improve my score from 1340 to 2100 in time span of 6 months by doing exceptional hard work.
I want to elate my score in two sitting.
Is it really possible???

This is a quick update. I took a study break during July and now i’m back at it 100% in August. My Math is now in the 630-660 range. Surprisingly I find myself either skipping or answering incorrectly level 3 questions more than level 4 questions. This is about 50-90 points worth of easy questions!!! The problem I have found is not being familiar with the Math concept. Once I review Math concepts that are my weakest points then I will surely average at least 670-720 on the Math Section.
Again this is coming all the way from 480- 510 in june! I still have 2 more months to prep until the October exam. Nothing is Impossible!
