I know 3 SAt's aren't required for northwestern and hopkins, but the websites say it's recommended to have 3. How much does the fact that i only have 2 SAT subjects hurt my chances at northwestern or hopkins?

Take a look at this website Compass: Admissions Requirements It lists what is required vs recommended (click on the school name for more specific info). If you dont meet the recommended # you may be ok, but if you are being compared to many others with similar stats who have taken 3 you may be at a disadvantage

I'm not sure about northwestern but I know Johns Hopkins doesn't require any subject tests. I went to an info session and was truly shocked when the admissions rep said that. They said they look at them only if you have them...but horrible scores are not factored into admissions decision.

Northwestern University does not require three SAT subject tests & you can be admitted with only one SAT subject test but it may depend upon to which of the six (6) undergraduate schools you apply. For example, the School of Engineering probably wants the Math 2 subject test & another related subject. The Medill School of Journalism may have requirements or, at least, preferences. SESP may not require any. The School of Music may require one related area. Communications may not require any, but prefer one or two to further distinguish candidates. The Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences competes with Harvard & Stanford and may prefer three as a matter of course to stay in line with the competition.
Remember this is only my opinion so you need to abide by the requirements set by each of the six undergraduate schools.
