i'm a sophomore hoping to go to nyu in two years, however there are 2 or 3 classes that my parents made me take that are really bringing down my grades. i'm taking classes that i actually care for in junior year and i plan to work my ass off; but i want to know, how heavily are freshman and sophomore year weighted in comparison to junior year?

Depends. What do you mean by “really bringing down your grades”?

I had a 3.0 UW freshman year and a 3.5 UW sophomore year. As a junior, I ended up with a 3.9 UW for the year. I was admitted to NYU this year for ED.

D had a 72 in chemistry and a 75 in algebra2/ trig in sophomore year. She was admitted to Steinhardt studio art ED for the fall of 2012. So it is going to depend on the program you apply to. For D, half of her acceptance was based on academics, etc. (GPA, ACT/SAT, EC’s…) the other 50% on her art portfolio. Despite these lower grades, D had many strengths in terms of academics and EC’s, so I do believe NYU takes a holistic approach and will overlook a grade or two if they feel you are an overall strong candidate.

my grades aren’t extremely bad, i’m thinking that i’ll get around a 3.59 or 3.6 gpa this year. i’m taking ap euro and chemistry honors this year, and it just feels like everyone else has nearly perfect gpas.

Just keep your ec’s up and write a killer essay on your application. I got into nyu with a 3.5 gpa overall.
