How important are interviews?

I am a senior from California who is strongly interested in applying to Vassar college. Are interviews with alum or admissions crucial or a key component in getting accepted into Vassar?

no. they arent.

What if you live in New York???

Considering they're all alumni interviews, I doubt that'd be significant.

I don't know. I am going back and forth about interviews in general. WHy would schools waste everyone's time if the interviews didn't have some weight? I am wondering if an interview can make or break an admissions decision if the person is on the edge.

As interview is a chance for a school to impress you, to become your #1 choice. That is one of the major reasons schools "waste" their time with interviews.

Well, although that might be the case sometimes, most interviews are evaluative. If they were only trying to impress the candidate, then why would they interview people applying Early Decision?

If our experience is any guide, there is no need for an interview, at least at Vassar. The Boychick visited Vassar twice, once in his junior year for a tour and information session, and once in his senior year for an overnight stay. He applied ED 1 on the basis of these two visits (and much thought, of course). He did not request an alumni interview. It didn't matter; he was accepted and will be a member of the class of 2011.

My daughter did two visits to the campus plus the interview. She was accepted ED for the Class of 2011. I think that the interview doesn't hold alot of weight but if you present yourself well, it can't hurt. I told my daughter that she should do the interview because anything positive that she could add to her admissions file would help with chances of admissions.

I also had two visits to the campus and a FANTASTIC interview, and was rejected ED....so I don't think they hold much weight - at all.

On the Vassar Chat, I was told by an admissions officer that the interviews don't really hold much weight, it'd mostly for you to get to know the school. Someone asked "don't the alumni send a report?". The admissions officer replied that they do, but 99.999999999% of the time, they LOVE us.

yeah...i don't think interviews count that great a deal anyways..it might count for someone who has bamboozling stats and an ordinary essay...but not for 'normal' applicants i guess..
