How important are SAT Subject Tests?

I'm taking Math II and Literature tomorrow and I'm very worried because I've been too busy to really prepare for them. People have been telling me different things... How important are SAT 2's when it comes to college admissions? (I'm applying to University of Maryland, UVA, Emory, Cornell, JHU, NYU...)

Depends on the school. Some like them better than regulars. You would have to check with each school to get the correct answer.

Korean! ha lolz sorry. Some schoosl require them... (so check out their perspective websites) It can really screw you up though. You really need to set some time aside and aim for a 800 and stick with what you get.

i.e. MIT adcom said requires one SAT science, one SAT math, one SAT humanties (like a language, english, or history)

soorim's such a pretty name; a hong I'm jealous lol my mom's a hong though. At this point I would be fobby and type in Korean, but can't cuz my comp won't allow such breaches in language lol.

It depends on what schools you're looking at. Most schools like to see at least 2, maybe 3.

I think the question was less, "How much do schools want to see SAT II's" or "How many SAT IIs to schools want to see" and more like "How much do SAT II scores matter in admissions?"

I was actually kinda wondering the same thing myself. I was going through some "actual results" on the WAMC forum and didn't see much of a correlation between SAT II scores and where people got in, all else (SAT Is, ACTs, grades, EC's) equal.

One of the schools to which I am applying doesn't require subject tests but says that if you chose to submit them, a high grade will offset lower scores on the SAT. I doubt that getting an 800 on the World History II will make them totally ignore a 650 on CR, but an 800 on Math IIc might make up for a boderline-700 on the math portion of the SAT. I've seen some data for schools that require them (Rice University lists avg SAT II scores of students admitted), and it seems that enrolled students have scores in the low-700s. So yes it's important, but you don't necessarily need an 800 on every single test to get into those colleges.

Then again... there are things you should do because the average applicant does it, therefore that automatically becomes the bare minimum. lol.

It's really nice if you can do well on the SAT II's because the subject tests tend to ask harder questions, especially Math II. If you get high 700's for all your subject tests or 800's, then colleges will know you're well rounded if you scored well on SAT I too. Whereas if you score sub-700 on subject tests, it won't look nearly as good.

So i think subject tests are there to just make you look a little better or maybe a little worse, so definitely put the effort into studying.

i have a question relating to this.

i got an 800 on american history and 800 on literature. however, i got a 650 on two more exams that i have taken. i'm planning to take world history soon and score 800.

should i just submit my two/three 800s and forget the rest? will colleges be happy with that?

i also had the same question in mind…

i took the us history suject test last month
and got a really really low score…:frowning:
i’ve never even taken a us history class before, but
there was no other subject I could take…

so would that one really really low sat 2 subject score
lessen my chances into getting into a school like Amherst or Williams?

(i also took math2c and scored a 750)

Only a couple of colleges in the country require 3 Subject tests (P and GT, I think), many require 2 and some don’t require any.

Adcoms use Subject tests to be able to look at how kids from very different HSs do on a standardized test. Since HSs vary so much, this gives them a tool for getting some idea of how well you mastered the content of a particular subject. They are not overly impressed to see students spending a lot of time, energy and money on standardized testing; 2-3 solid Subject test scores are plenty.

If A & W require 2 Subject tests, then one very low score out of the two submitted is not going to help your application. These are the two most selective LACs in the country and they are able to choose between many well qualified applicants. I wouldn’t recommend that anyone take a Subject test without taking the appropriate class or doing substantial self-studying. What year are you in? Someone applying to A & W would usually be taking advanced coursework (H or AP) in the core subjects (English, History, Science, or FL) which would help prep them for a Subject test.

How each school views SAT Subject Tests is shown in a school’s Common Data Set section C8; the row will be checked with one of:

Require - Recommend - Require for Some - Consider If Submitted - Not Used

im a junior… and I go to this small international school
my school only offers like four ap’s and not so many honor classes:(
i took ap world history, but sat 2 worldhistory is only on june
and december…i had already signed up for sat 1 in june…
im really stuck right now cause if my sat 1 score that i took today
is not that high i have to take it again in october
which means i have to forget about another sat2 test for
my early application ;-( …
should I just forget about applying for Amherst early and look for a different school?
