how important are the essays?

I was writing my michigan essays today and kinda noticed that
the prompts are generic and I couldn't really think of creative responses
exactly how important are the essays?

very important. if you are on the borderline, it could change the tide of your admission

um. truthfully. they aren’t all that important. i kno people who r in the admissions office including people who have actually read them. and on like a point system of how much standardized tests or grades are worth, something like alumnis are worth more than the essays.

If you feel you’re borderline, you should put your time into them.

what if the applicant is a borderline between borderline and below average
and the essays are generally good?hopefully, but made one spelling or grammar mistake? is this tolerable?

-my story

@jestergirl10 As true as your points are, I believe they abandoned the point system long ago. Although I will agree that the essays don’t hold nearly as much weight.

That being said, I got accepted this Thursday 3.4 GPA, 33 ACT and I credit a lot of that too the essays. Just because my GPA is very low. I can’t say for sure why they accepted me, but I do believe that for borderline applicants, they can be a big factor, so work hard on them and stand out to the admissions staff. Good luck. :)

Like blindtrombonist said, I think the essays will do it for you if you’re on the fence. I have a 29 ACT and a 3.75 and I think it’s my essays that got me in. Revise them a lot and have them edited by a professional/la teacher (if possible).

Here’s the deal.

Essays: important, as it demonstrates your ability to write effectively, efficiently, and ultimately persuasively. Let the Admissions officers feel intrigued and understanding to your story. However, this will not make or break your entrance into Umich.

-on the other hand, essays are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT when it comes to consideration for scholarships. Seeing how competitive it is to receive a scholarship from MICHIGAN!!!, your essays will definitely put you over the edge if they are well written. Do get me wrong, your gpa and test scores outweigh the essays in almost all consideration.

My daughter left out half of a sentence in one of her essays rendering the paragraph incomprehensible. She’s a happy sophomore at UM. I don’t think any really reads them.
