How important is Class Rank?

I am at a very, very, competitive high school in Texas, and my Unweighted 3.83/5.0006 (weighted GPA is done to the ten thousandth's place at my school because so many people are tied) is only enough to put me in the top 15% of my class of 600. In Texas, your class rank decides your fate with college; how true is this outside of Texas? Will I be hurt by this non-top 10% ranking?

That’s what you get for being an elitist.
But regardless, a below b average? That’s terrible. If having a below b average is good enough for top 15%, you’re probably giving your school more than it’s worth.

Raise your grades. And do well on the tests so they know.

I have a 90 average, and I’m in straight AP’s… =5.0006

The way you put it, it looks like you have a 3.83 out of 5.0006

Unweighted/Weighted

The purpose of the class rank is for colleges to see how well you performed among your peers since you can’t really compare students with different GPAs and GPA scales at different schools. It all depends where you’re applying to. Some colleges won’t really care, but it could be a detriment if you’re applying I top schools.

I have a similar problem, because my high school is huge. There are a little over 4,000 students, freshman and sophomores are at a separate campus than the juniors and seniors; there are about 1,000 kids per grade. It is a public school, but class rank kills you because half the students are extremely gifted (it is actually a very good school) and only some are the kids that don’t care. Even with a 4.0 a student could not be ranked in the top 5 or 10%, so a lot of administrators and parents are trying to eliminate the class rank in the school, which I think is a great idea among a lot of schools. NHS is also very hard to get into due to class rank.

If you’re OK with UTD, score 1950+/28+ and it becomes a safety.

What schools are you aiming for?

I got a 2220 on my Sat and am shooting for USC

@TechDude000, is your high school a ranking high school? Many top rated high schools in Texas are going non-ranking to help quality students that don’t make top 10% have a better chance at admissions.

Your GPA and test scores are good and should give you a good chance.

Some colleges use rank and each will use it to a different weight.

As for USC here is what their website says…
“First-year applicants are evaluated on the content and rigor of their high school course work, their grades, standardized test scores, activity summary, essay, short answers and counselor/teacher recommendations. There are no absolute “cutoffs” or minimums for grades, rank in class, or test scores. We are interested in the interplay of these elements as well as your personal accomplishments and potential for success.”

Class rank is very important. It compares you with other students with similar opportunities.
