I am currently finishing up my junior year, and I’m in the process of choosing my senior year courses. The issue I’m facing right now is choosing between taking all of the core subjects or taking classes that are more directly relevant to my intended major of political science. I have seven slots to fill, and I have been considering the following:
1 AP Literature
2 AP Calculus AB
3 AP Government
4 AP Human Geography
5 Symphony Orchestra
6 Gym
7 either AP Environmental, French, or Euro
In reality, I’d prefer to take Euro to finish off my schedule - but I know that I also need to be conscious of what will be more beneficial with regard to college admissions. Should I modify my schedule to include all the core subjects, or will a more humanities-heavy schedule be understandable by admissions officers since that is the path I will be pursuing?
For reference - I’m planning on applying to schools like UPenn, Princeton, Georgetown, GW, Boston U… you all probably get the idea. I’ve taken all of the core subjects every year of HS so far, and I have five APs under my belt and will likely have taken ten after senior year.
This is really similar to a post a few days ago including the intended major of political science which concerns me since you have one post. Whether you are the same person or not, the answer remains the same. You need to look at the recomendations of the colleges you would like to attend. For example, Harvard wants four years of math, four years of a foreign language, etc. Ignore these guidelines at your peril.
HS is not the time to take course work to support a college major. It’s prep work. EC’s can support your major but even then that isn’t necessary except for those applying to select business schools.
That’s a pretty good schedule, except I’d take both AP Euro and AP French, and drop AP Human geography since you already have two non academic classes and AP hg is an AP lite.
Do you have each of bio, chem, physics, and one more science, or only the first three?
I agree with @MYOS1634. Ap Euro and AP French, dropping hg or gym. 4years worth of science is a good idea, but doing it in the first three years is fine.
You have four units in science, all three (bio, chem, physics) plus even one AP, so you’re covered for all colleges in the country.
Switch AP hg for AP Euro, take AP French, keep gym (unless it’s not a requirement and you don’t like it!), absolutely orchestra. And it’s perfect
I’ll assume that it’s not an option. Few reasons why a senior would take gym if it were not required. And before anybody suggests testing out or taking online, it won’t kill a kid to throw a ball for 45 minutes. Their 40 year old self will be thankful.
