How important is greek life at UT Austin?

I really don't want to join a sorority at UT, but everyone keeps telling me that you "have" to be in a sorority if you want to go to UT. I know that only 15% of girls are in sororities, but what percentage of the girls wanted to join but just weren't accepted? Will I feel out of place if I go to UT but don't join a sorority?

I'm in the business major if that makes a difference.

So those 85% of gals who didn’t join one of the sororities that they “had” to join, are they in some kind of limbo state, neither students nor non-students, until they join a sorority?

The person who told you that probably meant “you HAVE to join a sorority at UT Austin if you want to be a soulless Barbie frat mattress.”

It makes a difference in business major.

Nobody at ANY school has to join a fraternity or a sorority. Typically speaking, people in the Greek Community are in the minority as far as the overall student body goes. Personally, it has never appealed to me in the slightest bit.
