How important is orientation?

^ i might not be able to make it to the june orientations, is this a big deal?
i heard i can view whats going on in the orientation online or something..
i also heard that not attending orientations will result in crappy classes because all the good ones are already picked.. is this true? i thought u can reg. online for classes?

help ~

thanks~

There are literally hundreds of classes that are availlable to students. It is a myth that all the good classes fill up. Yes, some students will have to take a class their second semester because they were locked out of that class the first semester, but that is not a common occurance.

And yes, Michigan students register for their classes online…except the first time when they register for classes during orientation or, of they miss orientation, when they get to campus for the first time.

This said, I would strongly recommend you attend Orientation. It is a good opportunity to get to know the campus and make friends.

Yeah I’m actually in the same situation;; I live abroad so I can’t go to the states and stay there for like 2 months;; So I sent an email requesting for the fall orientation (sept 1-3) but they didn’t reply back yet… so I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to do now…

International students have their orientation at the end of summer. Don’t worry, I was in the same boat, as were all my friends. We managed to get into 90% of our desired classes and for the 10% we couldn’t get into, wse got them out of the way our second semester. It is nothing more than a mild inconvenience.

Orientation would be a help

yeah i can attend the orientation if it’s at the end of the summer since i dont live in the US mainland, yet.

thanks~

Oh okay that’s good. And on the site, it talked about how we should send an email requesting for Fall Orientation? I did that about 2 weeks ago, but I didn’t get any reply or anything…so how do I know I’ll be going to the September one FOR SURE? :S

^ i think there’s a personal page thing in WA to notify them, i think.

Since I am a Portuguese student (and as you can guess, plane costs are quite expensive) , is it possible to send someone to the orientation in my name? Therefore he will be able to register me for the courses I want.

Also is there any possibility of register via online? At the same time as orientation begins? The reason being, if we are only able to register online after all orientations days, there is a possibility of not being able to chose some courses since they are already full, since this is made in a first come - first served base.

Thank you
ps: I am talking about SDSU

Hey guys don’t email them! Call them and leave message if you have too!!!

Orientation is required.

[Office of New Student Programs | Incoming Freshmen | Orientation - University of Michigan](http://www.onsp.umich.edu/incoming_freshmen/orientation/)

If you have been admitted for the Fall 2013 term and are unable to attend a summer orientation program, you are required to attend the Final Fall Orientation Program.

Getting into ****ty classes is a real possibility if you are in a program like engineering or something. Maybe not that bad the first year, but it can happen.

In that case, since I am an international student who will be attending the international orientation which is held after all the other orientation sessions, does that mean it is quite likely I will not be able to enroll in the classes I want?

^ no, more spots will be opened during the orientation, so you will be fine.

Yeah they stagger the openings across the different orientation dates

I’m attending fall orientation. How will the classes be?,

When I went to orientation I came out thinking it was a complete waste of time. As someone else mentioned, I’m pretty sure it’s required that you attend. I didn’t learn anything useful, though, and you can register for all your classes online. Just another hoop to jump through, I guess.

Who’s attending fall orientation?
