How important is SAT Writing to Colgate?

I just got my results and I feel like my hopes of going to Colgate just went down the drain. Got 520 in writing (770M and 670CR), and this seems to be way below the school middle range. I seriously dread retaking them in Dec. since I'll have SAT 2 and my final IB next week. Will good SAT 2 scores improve my chances regardless the 520? Or are the scores really that important?

background info:
-I'm in the top 10% of my class.
-Given that I do IB, I've had a lot of extra-curricular activities: Community Service, Charity Shows, Dance club, Sports, etc
-International Student.

I would relax and focus on the portions of the application that you can really control. If you don’t feel that you can re-take the SAT without bringing down your other two otherwise strong scores, then don’t re-take. Colgate looks at the application as a whole package, not numbers.

When the Writing section was first added, I know Colgate decided not to use it as admission criteria because they didn’t know anything about how well it predicted success at Colgate. They were going to collect data and reconsider down the line. Since the admissions materials don’t mention writing scores on the SAT averages sections, it seems like they’re still not using it. Feel free to contact the admissions office and ask! They’re really nice, I promise!

Thanks for the help; I’ll ask them. I forgot to mention that I was getting 700-720 (writing) in the Sparknotes SAT Prep Tests. Does this mean that I can achieve the scores or are they not good examples of tests? For the other sections, I got approx. what I was getting in the Prep Tests. Maybe I should just retake them, because I’ll be applying to other schools too.

You can also take the ACT. Colgate doesn’t require the Writing section of the ACT.

Sadly, ACT isn’t offered in my country. Anyway, I’ll be applying to other schools and some of these require writing so I guess I’ll have to retake.

Finally got the score details.

Critical Reading (670) 8-wrong

Math (770) 1-wrong

Writing (520) 10-wrong 3-omitted

Essay 4; I had a really messed up pencil I had just bought that morning, just looked at the essay and i couldn’t read what I wrote so not surprising. They were probably too kind to give me 1 each lol

Maybe if I’d scored better in the essay, my writing scores wouldn’t have been so bad. I’m going to retake for December, hopefully I’ll improve.

they don’t consider your writing score, or so they say. i would still retake and try to raise because even if they dont officially consider that score, they will still see it. but dont be too concerned if your cant improve your writing score significantly. its not a major part of your application at all, plus, your other scores are wonderful.

I took SAT 2 this month, I got 800 Math 2, 800 Physics. This was more encouraging. I’m still going to retake the first one but I’m no longer as worried. I will try to have a really good Personal Statement, then hope for the best. Thank you all.

Apply to Colgate and don’t worry about the writing score. If you feel that you do need to retake the writing part of the exam, just relax and do your best. A tip: Longer essays tend to get higher scores, so write a lot! You have a good chance of being seriously considered for admission to Colgate – but only if you apply. Good luck to you.
