How important is the AMC/AIME?

<p>I've heard that winning awards are important, especially national level awards including the AMC, but is qualifying for the AIME usually necessary to get into a college like MIT?</p>

<p>It’s definitely not necessary. There have been many MIT acceptees who didn’t even have a clue what the AMC was during their high school years – for evidence, just ask some of the current MIT students who are still posting in the school’s forum.</p>

<p>Yes, but I know of many people who got into HYPMS who didn’t have the perfect 4.0, national awards, perfect SAT etc. Try your best, but if you don’t have national awards, it’s not a deal breaker.</p>

<p>I just found out that I was the AMC12A winner in my school, to my deep surprise. Math is definitely my weakness (I’m hoping for about a 600 is for my M SAT).</p>

<p>Also, math has been my weakest grade through HS, and in 9th grade I really had problems with it (the reason my GPA isn’t as good as it should be).</p>

<p>Anyway, will winning the AMC in my school (which is a pretty competitive private school) and advancing to the AIME be a good balancer for my application?
I’ll be applying to pretty top schools.</p>

<p>Well, it does depend on how well you did overall and not just at your school. Advancing to the AIME is definitely a good thing to show schools.</p>

Well, it depends. If you are a science lover, science bowl tends to be more important for you.</p>

<p>Well, ya. Getting in to USAMO,USABO,USAPHSO,USACHEMO will definately give you a chance to get into IVY but you should still mention them even if you don’t get in it. Since it will show your love for science/math. For me, i didn’t do well on USAMTS, but still mention it in the apps cuz i’m a math lover. yes! lol</p>
