Amc 12 Aime

hi I'm applying to yale early action this semester and i was wondering how important qualifying for the aime actually is

apparently only 8600 out of 225000 kids make AIME

do the admissions officers(at yale in particular) know this, or should I somehow give an explanation of this?

They'll know it's a fairly impressive achievement, but it won't guarantee you anything. No real explanation should be needed.

Yes, AMC/AIME/IMO are all well known.

At HYPMS and Caltech qualifying for AIME is an okay achievement. If you
claim to be somewhat competent at Math then a decent score just helps
your case.

A very large number amongst the seniors who go beyond that (i.e high score
on AIME+ high score on AMC12) to USAMO apply. You can be quite sure
that those invited to MOSP and/or IMO are also applying.

The interesting award at the AMC level is if you are the School top scorer. This
tells the college that amongst your immediate peers you were relatively
excellent.

what if your like the only person that qualifies... everyone else gets like a 50 on amc12? then you'll be school top for sure but it's not a big achievement

I've always wondered about this (already finished with the application process, so I don't really carea anymore) but how impressive is it to get above 100 on AMC12 as a freshman/sophomore?

Regarding Post#4: School topper is school topper. Does not matter.

Regarding Post #5: Sophs, Juniors do qualify all the time at soem schools
and have decent scores (100-120) on the AMC12.

Scores stand out when they are off the charts - like > 130 on the AMC12
and >9 on the AIME.

I scored 1 on the AIME :).

How would a 7 on the AIME (with a decent AMC score) be viewed by non-tech colleges, e.g. Duke, Stanford, Princeton, etc.? I know that S and P have good math programs, so it probably isn't worth that much, but I don't know whether I should bother listing the 7 or just AIME Qualifier.

AIME is not that impressive, USAMO is. There are so many AIME qualified kids on CC.

^ But then again, it is CC.

6 and above on the AIME would be indicative of signficant talent; But
even if you got 0 you were still qualified to take the AIME and that in
itself is significant if Math is not your intended major. Remember that
lopsidedness in Math is not necessarily indicative of success in your pursuits
in college. However a science or sociology or applied math as in economics
focused applicant might get some leverage with just qualifying for AIME.

Princeton has one of the top programs in the nation for Math majors and
seems to not only value the AMC/AIME but also advanced math coursework
via EPGY/College credits (MV Calc, Linear Algebra, PDEs, etc).

Harvard, Princeton, Caltech and MIT seem to have got the bulk of the
IMOs and the MOSP Qualifiers from past years.

i never qualified in AMC.
I got 109 when the cut off was 117 (.
I left the country after soph year though, and I didn't get a chance to write it
should i still mention that i was selected in my school to write (they choose only some students to write the AMC).

Regarding Post#12, the cutoff is that high for only AMC10 not
AMC12.

A score of 7 on AIME is good. It ranks you about the top 450th among the graduating seniors in the nation. I am sure those schools know about it.

Thanks for the answers!

if qualification for AIME is an Ok achievment for HYPMS, then how do schools such as carnegie mellon, berkeley, UT, UMICH, georgia tech view it

also I'm on varsity cross country or was until my knees started to break down after my sophmore year.

which is more impressive. Lettering or AIME?

Okay, okay! You can edit your posts, you don't need to keep posting. Someone will answer soon enough.

I think sitting for the AIME is more impressive than lettering for XC. Unless you are on a national caliber team like Elmhurst York or FM.
