How important is the counselor rec?

Hi! I'm a bit worried because I'm not sure how good my counselor's rec will be. She doesn't really know me that well... she was gone for like 2 years and I only email her if I have questions. I'm kind of shy... is it really bad if all my teachers/counselor say in their letters that I am shy? I'm a good student, I have a 3.9 but I'm just not the kid who always speaks up in class. Thanks!

For the majority of schools test scores and grades are the most important factors and can usually get you in alone but if you are applying to selective and highly selective schools, the recommendations make up a critical part of your application and in getting accepted.

Thank you. I’m not worried about my teacher recs because the teachers I chose know me, but my counselor doesn’t. Which rec is more important, the counselor or the teachers? Thank you! :)

Note that for many colleges the counselor’s rec is often just a form that verifies that you are student in good standing at the high school, provides your current class schedule, GPA and possibly rank, and attaches your transcript and usually the school’s profile (it describes such things as courses available including APs and the weighting method used for grades). For example, if you are doing the common app see the School Report Form which is the one the counselor needs to fill out. Even for those that require more from a counselor including a true recommendation like that of a teacher it has much less importance than teacher recs unless it says something really bad about you (highly unlikely).
