How important is the foreign language requirement?

On MSU's website, it says that you need 2 years of a single foreign language. My sophomore year I took German 1. I chose not to take the second year of FL and am now ending my junior year. However, MSU's site says this about course requirements:

"If you are lacking in one of these areas, it does not mean your application will not be considered. However, a less rigorous curriculum could put you at a disadvantage."

Will it hurt me significantly if I don't have the second year of FL? Will taking German 2 over the summer help even though it's not consecutive with my first year of FL? (I probably won't be able to take summer classes anyway).

Has anyone here been accepted to MSU without 2 years FL?

The higher the level completed of foreign language, the better.

College foreign language courses may advance you further than high school foreign language courses.

Why are you so reluctant to take German 2 senior year?
Sign up for it and you will meet their criteria.
Entirely up to you to review German 1 so you will be up to speed when you start your senior year.

Skimmed through your past posts-the other college you are interested in lets you substitute 2 years of Arts for 2 years of fl.
Something to think about.
Good luck.

2 years foreign language often is a minimum requirement, and the mention “if you don’t…” usually implies “if circumstances outside your control, i.e your school doesn’t offer it”, etc. Essentially you’d have to have a very rigorous record to make up for having only 1 year. (At schools like MSU, typical applicants will have 2, many successful applicants have 3.)
With only 1 year of German you’ll have to start German from scratch at the college level, and 1 semester college language = 2years high school language, so it’s brutal.
If you can take German2 over the summer, do so, it’ll be worthwhile by greatly increasing the odds and making your 1st semester in college a bit easier.
The only alternative is taking 2 years of another subject that would “replace” it, but you have to check with MSU, I don’t know whether they wouldn’t hold not having German2 against you.

Thank you all for the help
