How important is the SAT Math 2 for semi selective schools?

agree with math mom.

Take the subject tests that correspond with APs in May. Save June for a retake if needed, but shouldn’t need to is studied appropriately for AP. AP is 3 hours. The ST, all multiple choice, can be completed in 30-40 minutes – a great warm-up for the AP a week or so later. (Granted, not all AP’s track well with the ST’s, but the main ones do.) Take M2 in June.

I think SAT2 “june senior year” is the june between junior and senior year not the june after senior year. I could be mistaken, but I can’t see it working any other way. D would be taking tests then, too, but there’s a band trip that conflicts. And the SAT2’s cannot compete with a trip to Disney World.

My soph S will take SAT 2 BIO and US Hist in May this year (because he is currently taking AP classes in those subjects). He will take the AP tests a couple of weeks later.

For Junior year, he will take SAT 2 Math II in Jan (recommended for students in his math track because apparently they finish with pre-calc first semester and should be prepared with minimal extra studying). He will likely take ACT in Feb and maybe the SAT in Mar (depends on how PSAT goes in fall but I expect S to be better at ACT based on PLAN and this year’s PSAT results). ACT could be taken again in Apr or Jun of Junior year or Fall of Senior year. He could also take Chem SAT II in May if it aligns well with the AP curriculum (does anyone know?)

I expect S to do much better on ACT and so we are planning on some tutoring for that - will probably wait until next fall after soccer season to start the tutoring as I don’t want him to burn out and don’t want it to be too far in advance of the test. Don’t think we will bother with tutoring for PSAT since I don’t expect him to get NMSF type score. It will be the writing part (on both SAT and ACT) that will hold him back - those are much lower than the other sections. I’m not sure if it’s grammar rules that are tripping him up. Will have tutor look at that closely.

Bluebayou is right. If you are prepared for the AP test, the math/science SATII’s are a piece of cake. I went through a couple of practice tests the night before my SATII and that was more than enough.

If you are an easterner, June is summer time, and the student is officially a rising senior. If in the west, school is still in session and the student is officially still a Junior.

That being said, June for senior (4th) year can be used to take a language test to possibly pass out of the college’s language requirement.

Sorry to be confusing, that was a typo - SAT2’s junior year. The only time one might want to take one senior year is to get out of a foreign language requirement, though most colleges will also offer placement tests. (oops should have read bluebayou’s post!)

The reason older son did subject tests in June was he took a look at the physics test and realized that he was going to have to do some review as Physics C didn’t cover all the questions. We go to school until the end of June here in NY.

Someone has compiled a list of SAT2 requirements for most schools.

For competitive schools, I would suggest to take it even if it is only recommended. Make sure you check out the requirement of a particular program, not just a college. There are sometimes differences (e.g. for pre-med or engineering).
Last, I did not realize SAT2 may be considered in the decision for scholarships and my D did not submit the scores to one school. When they are comparing candidates that are at the same level, the SAT2 scores may give you an edge even if it is not required for admission.
