Sending SAT Subject Tests?!?!

Ok so I took 3 subject tests (chemistry, us history, and math II) and all of the schools I am looking at only "strongly recommend" (aka require) 2. I got a 770 on chemistry a 760 on us history and a 670 on math II. I don't know whether I should send math II or not because I think I want to major in math in college and I got a 720 on the math section of the SAT reasoning test and I got 5's on AP Calc AB and AP Stat exams so will the 670 make me look weaker in math? My guidance counselor thinks it still looks good but I am not sure. I am looking at schools like UVA (school of arts and sciences), Washington and Lee, William and Mary, Duke (school of arts and sciences), etc. Please help!! Thank you!

If they don’t required SAT2, you may just pick the two higher scores for submission. Many schools for engineering or science do require Math2 as one of the 2 required SAT2 scores though. But honestly, are you sure you want to major in Math? That Math2 score is pretty lame for that.

Yeah I think Duke does but I am applying to arts and sciences for all of them but I put on my application that I am interested in majoring in math so would they want to see math?

For the colleges you mention:

If you submit SAT, Duke requires, not just recommends, two subject tests. If you submit more than two it considers the highest two unless a lower one is required for a major; math is required for engineering but not for math in A&S; your math score is not bad for Duke and even if it might be it won’t be held against you.

Washington and Lee and UVa do not require but recommend two subject tests. Your 670 is actually good for those and even if they might consider it low they would then just use the higher two in the admission decision.

Williams & Mary neither requires nor recommends subject tests. If submitted, the college give them some but not any significant consideration. Your scores are fine for W&M.

Apparently your GC is ill-informed. Your Math II score of 670 places you in the 40% percentile - appreciably below average. The sample of students taking this test is certainly a talented, self-selected group. However, these are the students you are competing against for admission to highly selective universities.

For example, Duke’s 25/75 range for Math II scores is 710/790. Your score is not even close to making the middle half.

Your scores on the Chem (80 percentile) and USH (86 percentile) are solid and should be submitted. I know Duke admits freshmen to a college, not a major, so they will not care if your SAT II line up with your stated preferred major. Even if they did, there are many legitimate reasons for not submitting one and adcoms will not assume that you simply scored poorly.

I would leave the math score off all applications. Adcoms state that lower scores won’t be considered, but I would not give them the opportunity.

For most SAT2, the 50% is around 650 (620-690). Math2 has the highest score for 50%. As I said earlier, 670 in Math2 is really lame for intended Math major, particularly for the schools on the list. I would hide it unless it is required.

Actually, the highest 50% scores are for Korean and Chinese - both a ridiculous 790! Apparently many students like to demonstrate their proficiency in their native language.

^ You are right. I often forget about the language SAT2 as my D is only applying engineering schools and focus on Math & science ones on the first page.

Ok thanks I will leave it off and I know its not a great score but I took it in June after three months of prepping for and taking 6 AP exams so I didn’t try as hard as I should have. I finished AP Calc AB and AP Stat with 101 and 100.5 respectively as my final grades and the Math II has so much geometry on it and I took that in 8th grade so I still want to major in math. If I am lame at it then I will just switch. Thanks again!
