How impt. is Welcome week/Zero week?

I am an incoming transfer student. I notice on the calendar we got at orientation that there are some events on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and 25. Classes begin on Thursday the 27th. The events listed are: Welcome rally, convocation, new student celebration, writing placement exam, etc. I do not need to take any placement exams so I am wondering if I really need to attend any of the events on Monday through Wed? I planned a brief weekend getaway and will be out of town on Monday the 24th.

If you’re going to be living in the dorms, your RA will pretty much gather your entire floor and march over to the ARC Pavilion for the New Student Celebration, so you can’t skip that one unless you’re not in your room when the RA comes around and you tell your roommate so that they can notify your RA on where you are. After the New Student Celebration, there’s going to be food out on Hutchinson Field, if they’re going to do the same thing for Fall 2012 like they did for Fall 2011. There’s also going to be a mandatory floor meeting. Everything else is irrelevant–except for the 2 mandatory floor meetings my former RA held and the New Student Celebration, I never went to the other events.

If you’re NOT living in the dorms, you don’t need to do any of that.

(I’m a Fall 2011 transfer student)

Thanks. I am not going to be in a dorm. I am an older transfer student with a family and plan to commute from home. I plan to just show up for classes on Thursday if I don’t need to be there earlier.
